raced my modded 96 vs stock 99

first of all, for those of you who know about my car getting stolen, I got my car back and decided to keep it and fix the problems with it. It's been wrecked and minor mechanical damage such as exhaust leak and mil code is blinking 1011 which is the EVAP canister....anyway, my friend has a 99 se auto with NO mods and I have a 96 gle auto with PRCAI, ypipe (with a leak now thanks to scumbags), no resonator on my B-pipe, FSTB, RSB, and not much else. My friend and I raced a bunch of times on the highway and it was a helluva lot closer than I expected it to be. I feel like something is wrong with my car now, it will hardly chirp the tires off the line. I was looking for some help. This is how close it was. First, he started on the ramp one car length ahead at 60 mph when we hit it. I think I was around 90-95 when I was finally next to him and I never passed him until around 115. I never got a car length on him. Next, we were at about 90 side by side and hit it. I didn't pull hardly at all until about 115 again. By the time I hit 125 I had to pull back from traffic. We did this a few more times. Then, side by side on an onramp we were at a stop. Right of the line I had my rear bumper at his front at about 45 mph. by the time i hit 100 I only had 2 carlengths on him. but when I hit 130 I had about 4 (he may have let off but not sure). I know that my car used to be a lot lot faster b/c I raced a 99 se auto before with only my "homemade" cai with a K n N panel filter rsb, and fstb. Back then, we raced off the line and at 75 I had a good 3 or 4 carlengths on him. He also had a stillen intake he said, I don't know. If anybody can help thanks.

Exhaust leaks kill performance, and like you said you have one right? A leak, especially in the downpipe, causes major HP loss.

And yes being a '96 he shoulda CREAMED becuase the early 4th genz are SUPERIOR to the much slower 97-99 conterparts. :

You will own everyone (and be a lot out of pocket).....but it won't be worth it if you can't drive as good as some of the other 5 speeders (ahem theblue). You'd still have a tight car though.

Re: raced my modded 96 vs stock 99

Jaxima,

Kind of off subject, it sounds like you still have a stock muffler, I have the same mods as you but I want to remove the resonator from the exhaust, since you have a Y once you removed the resonator (or added a B pipe) did notice much more noise? I had an aftermarket muffler took it off because it was loud but now the stock seem a lil too quiet so I will either add the muffler again or keep the stock and remove the resnoator.

Thanks,

P

Well, the very first thing I ever did to my exhaust was to replace the resonator with a straight pipe. As far as I could tell from inside the car it was a little bit deeper at low rpms and a little louder, if any. I thought it sounded better. I do have the stock muffler b/c I don't want my car to be loud and I want it to look stock too. IF you want your car to be louder with the stock muffler, get a high flow cat instead, or do both. good luck

Thanks for the compliments Alex and Reichmax

Actually that is an old picture...I now have the full stillen kit, 5% tint, a custom antenna and the soon to be 5spd. ($1250). I took like 20 new pics but I lost the film.

I have B&G sport springs w/stock SE struts which lowered me 1.7 in the front and about 1.55 in the rear. When I get my 5-speed in it'll probubly even out. Handling is 5 times as good with the springs and ride quality is the same as my stock SE suspension. I need to get some KYB AGX struts becuase my stock ones are slowly dying..once I get the new struts in my handling will improve that much more.

BowieMax...I will forgive your lack of knowledge ONLY becuase you have very tight rims which I just happen to love

the difference, if it even exists can be offset by a slightly quicker launch or a better driver

pat i dont know if you had a chance to hear dainels car but he had a y-pipe hi-flo cat and b-pipe with his stock muffler. it was a little louder at idle and when he revved it, but riding beside him i couldnt tell the difference from stock. also the factory muffler with no resanator has an awful "tin can" sound when you rev it in neutral.

i think your best bet is to get a quieter after market muffler. the one you and josh have (had) is a pretty loud design. you should hear josh's car now. lets just call him lil'nismo.

Thanks Carl,

Thats what I need to hear, I was hoping a 50 mod would give my car that bimmer muffler sound (removing the resonator) but I guess I will go back to aftermarket and keep the stock in the garage.

Got you, watch flying through those tolls especially the one on 95 going north bound through the tunnel, the cops are everywhere looking for people to speed through them.

I kind of feel what you're saying about the trunk, but this debate or argument is silly. It's like twins looking for flaws in the other eventhough they basically look and run the same. If the car would have stayed unchanged for five years without any changes wouldn't be benificial for Nissan or it's buyers.
