Id suggest temporarily removing the canister and subsequently the control valve/solenoid. Due to the location of the canister and how it was built Im 95% sure that your valve bolts have rusted and you will not be able to separate the two without breaking. Even for the mechanically uninclined the replacement of this part is extremely straight forward and simple
Bottom line is that you should probably be looking for a new control valve AND a new EVAP canister to go with it. Do a search on replacing the valve and you will see how common this is. An even smarter idea might be to buy a new $15.00 gas cap which can falsely indicate EVAP emissions leaks. I speak from personal experience.
