Re: Are Maxima's safe in car accidents?

Yeah, I expected Nissan to advertise the 5th gen Maxima rolled over in a 5mph bumper test, but they haven't done it yet for some reason.

My ex-gf (bless her soul) died when she hit a cat on the highway and the car exploded in a giant ball of flame.. it was a 2003 loaded titanium edition SE... very tragic... I inherited her estate though so it was ok.

Anyways, gonna go read my Consumers Reports now, catchya later!

According to all the stories from org members the car seems to be safer than the ratings suggest. Just search for accident and you'll see gruesome photos but the driver walks away. It may be expensive to repair, but if it saves your life that's all that is important.

She hit a cat and the car exploded? Must have been recent if it was in a 2k3 Maxima. Sorry about her.

Hmmm, my G/F hit a cat with our 2K and it was the cat that exploded, not the car.

Apparently you go through your 9-lives pretty quickly when a 225 tire compresses your head to the pavement.

...thought I'd chime in. A couple years ago I was rear ended when I was stopped at a light. A s10 blazer hit me almost dead on in the back going about 40mph. I heard screetching and looking my rearview only to see this ugly truck flying towards me. I braced myself the best I could in .5 seconds and was hit. The car was pushed into the intersection where luckily, other traffic had not statred going yet. The engine was still on, and I drove it off of the road to a parking lot. I heard a funny noise and the tire ended up bursting from me driving with a piece of metal cutting into it. When I got out I couldnt believe how much of the car had smushed up like an accordian, form the back to the rear window was totally a mess.

The damage sucked, but my insurance covered it, and the maxima did its job - to crumple and protect me. I had neck pain for two days, as did my passenger, but we were fine. I would say that in my experience, the maxima is a very safe car. It is part of the reason I bought the 2k2 for my wife.

I don't think he was going 40mph. Some people here say if you get hit in the rear by a car going 40mph while your stopped, you would be in soo much pain and would probubly have a damaged spine. Are you sure your not over-exaggerating?

I had a 2000 SE that I was driving up until march. I rolled the car twice with four people in the car, including me. We all walked away with nothing more than minor cuts. We were all shook up, but other than that, were still here!

If that doesnt prove the safety, i dont know what will. We were doing about 50mph.

And, BTW, I did buy a 2002 max.

Craig, on the accident report the driver of the Blazer estimated he was doing 40mph at time of impact. It was a two lane highway that is 55mph in parts.

Its unbelievable you got out of that car without major injury, something(one) else was protecting you besides that Max.

Only been in 1 accident in my life and it was in my 3 week old Max SE. Hit a woman doing 35mph, totaled her car..mine was pretty bad, but able to be repaired. No major injuries, just emotionally exhausted looking at the Max.
