washing your wheels...
ok, my hand looks like I tried to pet a bobcat after trying to wash INSIDE my wheels to get the brake dust off. I was tempted to remove the wheel. Is there any safe brake dust remover? I know they all say they are, but I know some of them will cheeze up our painted wheels.

My wheels get dusty after 2 days...
yeah i find myself trying to clean in there too but lately i'm trying not not worry about the dirt on the inside of the rim. I've been spraying some simple green inside there and it seems to remove some of it without having to use your hands. I also use simple green on the tires and then scrub em down. make sure everything is wet before spraying this stuff on though.
I hope you're not washing your car this early Tim.
I also use Simple Green on the wheels. Not everything comes off easily, so you'll still have to get your hands back there. Simple Green removes the easy surface stuff, so I use laundry detergent to get the tough stuff off.

A few weeks ago I removed each wheel and cleaned the inside with a special cleaner my friend told me about, from Girots Garage. You really can't do a complete job if you don't actually dismount each wheel. I then waxed the the entire rim (front and back) to make future cleanings easier.
good idea...
I will wax them on the next rotate. til then, I'll try the Simple Green stuff..
Yeah, I was washing for Friday
Since we are having ice and snow on wednesday, looks like I'll be back out there on Thursday
I love washing a car in 40 degree weather

I don't use any chemicals on my car. I'm worried that it'll be detrimental. As for cleaning the wheels, I just use my hand. The brake dust washes off my hand easily and doesn't stain. I can also get into the cracks and crevices a little easier. I have the 5-spoke wheels and not the 6-spoke ones, so it might be a little easier to clean.
Mmmmmm ... BOBCAT ... thats one Mean Pu$$y!!

I use the same type of wax that I use on the rest of the car, which in my case is the Mothers Carnuba Paste wax. Any wax should be fine as long as it does not contain any harsh abrasives. Just use a clean part of your rag each time you dip into your wax so you don't transfer any wheel grime back into the can. This really makes keeping the rims clean much easier.

First, don't do anything that involves water, to the wheels right after you have driven your max (some here, including myself, theorize that washing a hot wheel could potentially warp your rotors)..
Anyways, I have horrible brake dust on mine, but it's not gonna get washed off until it starts getting warmer..
(Last time I washed the car, I used the same car cleaner I used on the rest of the Max (I make it extra dilluted/mild), and then used an old (soft) toilet brush to clean the insides (it's actually a very good tool for the job, and I figure it doesn't really matter if I should happen to introduce minor scratches to the inside.. you wouldn't be able to see them anyway) It all came off rather nicely.. I just cleaned the outside of the spokes with a rag, worried that the brush might be a bit too harsh where it matters most!!)

anyone tried.......
They make brakedust covers for the MAX I'm not sure how good they look and was wondering if anyone has them on their ride. The dust comes off prretty easy as long as you keep up with it but as soon as you clean the rim the battle starts again the first time you touch the brakes
I've seen Simple Green at grocery stores, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, etc. Look in the automotive or household cleaning sections. If you still can't find any, try http://www.simplegreen.com
various
1) Brake dust wheel protectors are supposed to be some of the worst things you can install. Ultimately, they prevent heat from dissipating as it should.
2) Any wheel cleaner that advertises itself as not containing harsh chemicals should be fine. I have used both Zymol and Eagle 1, and both have worked well.
3) Zymol makes a wheel protective spray that seems to work very well. I spray it on the outside of my wheels, and brake dust just wipes off with a paper towel for roughly the next 6 months.
