Run in with a 1.8 GTI

By the way this guy was cruising it looked like it was chipped as a stock 1.8 can't boogie like this did (much less keep up with my Max). It wasn't really a "race" since I think he was late for work and I just decided to play ketchup. When he was turning where he works, he tried flashing his hazards, I was like WTF? It wasn't even a race.

Anyone one know how a 2001 SE 5 speed will fare against a chipped 1.8? On the highway? 20-40 mph roll? Anyone raced against these?

Search for "1.8t".

You'll find plenty of "opinions".

1.8T

Not for nothing, but those things are pretty fast. My friend with a 2002 Jetta 1.8T, just got exhaust and chipped. I'm pretty sure he'll keep up with me, but the 3.5 Maxima should beat it.

Any idea how much boost he was running?

I have one.... wanna find out???

My 337 is stock right now though. I already have the VW exhaust upgrade but am going to get a better one. Going to install the Boost controller next month.

This thing is not a powerhouse like the max, but it can roll. Give me a bit and I will be putting down maximas too....

But no matter what, I will always make sure my max stay faster.

Ya, that's what happened. He always stayed ahead of me that's why I wasn't able to ketchup.

1.8t's can be made seriuosly powerful.

I had an A4 1.8tq - I went through it pretty well, suspension and engine mods... They make alot torque when the boost comes on. My Audi felt more planted than the Max does, I think my Max would walk it at top end, but from the dig it would pretty even to the top of each gear.

Coming back from Syracuse last week I ended up rolling with a crew of hooked up Audi/VeeDubs on I90. I had a hooked up Jetta try to take me, he stuck close up to about 90ish and ran outta gearing. he moved aside to let the "hitter" come through, a hooked up A4. now that thing had some serious mods.. we rolled to about the high 130s and it was dead even. I let off because my hood was starting to flap in the wind, and my wipers were being dragged up my windsheild. The Max isn,t as planted at high velocity as the german cars, just my opinion though.

just my .02$

I'm kinda confused, I race a couple of time with the Jetta 1.8 and I was able to walk away on the highway, they were hanging up to a certain speed, I think we have a better top end but they were all stock, one time I had a run with a Golf 1.8, he was following me up until I hit 180Km/hr, I then started to see his beam becommig a pea, but perhaps he was affraid to run at that speed. Maybe you should consider adding a Y-Pipe.

Cheers

These things were pretty hooked up

These cars had work done on them, it was pretty obvious by the power they were making. Stock those engines suck. 150hp for the earlier years and then 170-180 for the later years. Asimple chip upgrade nets about 47-50 hp gain, add that to an exhaust and intake, you get about 220hp, thats about where they max uot at that turbo size (a KKK K03, the next level of mods (go to a KKK K04 and a larger intercooler and some injectors etc) will get you about 240-250hp (sometimes more depending on the gas), the next upgrade is more complex with the replacement of the turbo with some sort of garret t25 t28 or t30, lots of work and money involved.

I think the Jetta was running the K03 with some work and the A4 the K04 with some work. These cars are geared for the Autobahn and can hold serious velocity. I got rid of mine because I kept bending valves and wrecking the head.

My Max is stock and I am leary of doing any upgrades because of warranty issues (I had alot with the Audi) The car screams stock, just has a crappy suspension. I wish they were more thorough with the suspension on the 6 speeds, no factory rear swaybar! WTF
