Pics of my 02 Stillen Y-pipe conversion

I finaly managed to get them on my computer! Heres the pics.

This first pic is just of my engine cover removed. I had to remove the intake manifold 1st(look it';s polished!).

Pic # 2 is of the header heat shield and header o2 sensor. I had to crouch in my engine bay for most of this work and this picture. BTW the intake manifold is removed at this point(I meant to take a picture of that off). Behind the header is the valve cover and infront of it is the engine compartments fire wall.

Pic #3, Heres a pic of the header with the heat shield removed. As you can see it's pretty hard to get too!

Pic # 4 is a under side view. At this point I had allready removed the 2002 Y-pipe. The picture is of the 2002 pre-cat and if you look over to the right you can see my socket wrench on the bottom right header bolt. It is the only bolt you can really get to from underneath the car unless you rotate the engine.

Pic#5 is of the enviroment in which I was doing the work in. Theres no garage here or fancy air tools, just a sand driveway and good old fashion hand tools! If you look over to the right you will see my intake manifold and franken intake. You can also see my oem 2002 Y-pipe.

Pic # 6 is of my rear head with my oem Y-pipe removed, you can see the gasket hanging off of it. If you look closely you can see the new place the EGR valve resides, it now bolts onto the engine block.

Pic # 7 is a picture of the stillen Y-pipe installed.

I wanted to take a lot more pics but my memory card on my digi cam is screwed up, it only holds 7 pics now

If you want me to take pics of the oem Y-pipe and header let me know.

Enjoy!

Ethan, Im still looking into doing the headers on my max so I can benefit heavily once the supercharger is installed

I think some of these pics are going to help. I hope I can do the rear one without moving the engine. If it can be done with only removing the intake manifold, then Im in to do it myself.

[So, are you saying you fitted a fourth generation y pipe onto your 2002 ? Thats the impression I was getting as it seems like there is no y pipe available for the 2000+ yet..

I was told there would be some modification needed to fit a fourth generation y pipe onto a fifth generation.. any truth to that ?

Good luck and make sure you are extremly carfull lossening the bolts, if you strip one you are completly screwed! Also make sure you have several different lengthed 14 mm deep sockets, a long socket wrench, a short socket wrench, a 3 inch extension and a 12 inch extension. Also it may not be a bad idea using liquid wrench before attempting to remove the bolts (I did not though).

BTW are you going to get OBX headers? Are they available yet? Last I heard they where still making them.

I used a 2 piece stillen Y-pipe. It will fit 95-01 maximas with fed spec emmisions and cali spec. The fitment of the Stillen pipe on the 00-01 max's is rahter crude. (I had a hell of a time getting it on!)
Also cattman makes a Y-pipe for the 5th gen too.

Nice pics and descriptions, Ewok.

At least the result was better than your HZ headers.

In pick 7 what is the diameter of the Stillen pipe where the 02 sensor is connected? Looks like it might be a little on the small side from looking at the pic. That pipe needs to be about 2" if it is going to feed a 2 1/2" collector. Particularly if the sensor is blocking a portion of the flow.

His project was to retrofit his car with year 2000 headers and a 2000 Stillen Y-pipe. Such is not available for the 2002-03 yet.

The diameter of the pipe is the same where the o2 sensor is, 2.5 inches.

You reused the stock pre-cats? I fear you did all that work for no power gain. BTW has anyone noticed that on the 02 the rear cat is not monitored. May be some power gains available. Of course we wouldn't want to break any federal laws now would we?

I removed one of the precats and kept the front pre-cat on. BTW I dynoed my car so theres no need for you to fear the effects of this mod..

Search in the General disscusion forum. I gained a peak of 7 FWHP, I lost 5 TQ. At 6500 RPM I gained 23 FWHP and 26 FWTQ. I had the vacume lines on my intake manifold backwards so I think I would have made more power if I had the car running right.

Ohh ya, I have no check engines lights on or anything(thats why I left the front precat on)
