Well, I decided to go for it last night instead of waiting for the weekend to get here..
Took about 5 hours (till 1AM).
I have a few pics that Ill get up today or tomorrow.
The Max has such a nice engine growl at WOT now.
Definately more pickup and speed at the higher engine speeds.
I can absolutely detect more power, but.. I have to keep in mind that it has been hot and humid here for the past month.. and last night was the first night that the temp dropped to 45 and all humidity has vanished.. so that is adding to the power gain also.
I am babbling now because I got 3 hours sleep.. I'll write more later.

I just ordered a CAI yesterday... too bad it's on backorder. I hope it comes soon...

Any tips on the installation? Or do I just follow the instructions? TIA!

Follow the instructions, go find yourself a 3 1/4 inch hole saw, makes things alot easier. And it should only take you no more than 2 hrs to install with the right tools. I have pics of my install here below:

Thanks for the pics Russ! Thanks in advance for writing an "easier" set of instructions foozed! Can't wait, can't wait, can't wait!!!

What's the average dyno with these things on? I remember Russ saying about 15 fwhp... true or not?

Hey foozed,
What springs do you have on your car?
Are you using stock struts?

Looks very nice.

Thanks.

I put on ground control coilovers with Eibach springs.. and the stock struts.
I have 550's up front, and 300's in the rear.. Love them!

BUT, my struts are going.. I have 31000 miles, and you can definately tell they arent as strong as they used to be.

looking at the stock airbox system, I noticed that there seems to be 2 'tubes' leading to the airbox, one from the pseudo cold air snorkel, and another the comes from a white looking resonance box thats low in the engine bay.

my question is, what the hell is that white box there for? Is it a resonance box for throttle response (closed box), or a fender snorkel?

Hey Foozed, is the stock airbox heavy ???

from looking at my engine bay, it seems the stock airbox is a pretty big piece, i assume it must not be light, is my observation right ..?

Take out stock airbox: reduce weight
Instal new CAI: more HP

RESULT: faster max !!!!

yeepeee

So you're thinking about getting one too? The stock airbox was pretty heavy... I can't give you an estimate on lbs. cuz I don't remember.

Before i make the decision, i want to take a ride in a max that has the CAI to see how it sounds.....don't want my car to get too loud.

Hope the HP gain is real.......if its true, 10+ FWHP will be nice !!!

Under normal driving, and even light to moderate acceleration you honestly don't hear any differance. Its when you lay the hammer down and smack the gas (floored) that you hear it roar! It sounds so sweet =)

The Stillen intake sounds nice already... can't wait until I put the CAI on!

It looks really nice! How much did you cost you to get the kit and did it come with everything you needed to install the CAI? Thinking about it for my car too...

hour job

it take no more than an hour to install it. so pay no more tahn 50bux or what ever they charge per hour.. tell them to spray rust prrof paint on where they made the hole so the metal wont rust. and a good thing to add is to put silicone around the edges so if for some reason the cai rubs against the hole, it won't eat thru. and put velcro on the cai where you might see it rubbing. but if done right it should be nice and solid.

Great pictures!! How does the CAI sound in normal driving? (Non WOT) Is it much louder than stock or stock with K&N filter, since the filter is so far removed from the passengar compartment?

Sorry for a somewhat silly question, but where does the K&N Filter actually end up? Is it protected by the the inner fender somehow? Is it protected from the elements like rain and mud??

under normal driving you really can't notice it...at 3k rpm and over is when you can hear it...it is a nice rumble and at WOT it growls like hell...

the filter does go behind the fender...i know on my car there is a cover at the bottom of the fender and the inner fender wall so its very well protected from the weather...last week i even drove through some pretty deep puddles (rushing water and not my fault) and didn't have a problem....as long as you dont drive through standing water you shouldnt have a problem...the filter is still high off the ground...

clean

u gotta clean or replace the filter alot more often than a stock filter.. i suggest getting a ram air box. imo it's more convenient.. all u gotta do is close the ground air tubing and keep the top half of the air box off when it's rain season.. i know alotta ppl say "don't worry it ddon't suck up too much water" but i like to b on the safe side.

You can barily see the pipe going through the sheat metal here. Do you see the small grey piece of foam? Its keeping the pipe from rubbing around. Anyhow looking at the wheel from the side, the k&n filter runs in a up/down direction, and is protected by the wheel well liner.

Hope that helps.

Wow! Don't you love it! I just installed mine about a week ago. It took me about three hours, it could be done in about an hour and a half with someone who has done it before, but it's worth it to take your time. Just make sure that you clean it, because it'll get dirty fast (my friend has one). Buy the K&N filter cleaner kit for when you clean it.
Good luck with it.
