the 4th gen one has been out for a few months now. I'm waiting to see what the 5th gen one looks like myself...The torque loss on our cars is starting to get to me... A turbo will solve that in a hurry!

same two questions as always...

1. WHEN will it be done?
2. is it for *ALL* 5th gen, or just 2k/2k1?

1.one person is already running turbo...another person is waiting on parts. Try search, it will help u answer a lot of questions.
2.nope...only 2k and 2k1/AE. u have to wait.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: No Way~! Turbo For My Max

Those were questions to redfly so s/he could go get all the facts, and maybe get them all before posting half-truths and misinformation.

It's getting a little old to see generic "there's a turbo in the works" posts without any details. I already knew there is someone with a turbo, apparently redfly didn't.

Really my post is more about question 2. I already knew it was for 2k and 2k1 but he posted "4th and 5th gen" and people seem to keep forgetting 2k/2k1 and 2k2 are both 5th gen, but not necessarily the *same*.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: No Way~! Turbo For My Max

I'd read that before (nice article, and nice car by the way) but I don't really understand what it has to do with this?

My comment was twofold...
1. 2k/2k1 and 2k2 are both "5th gen" but that doesn't mean a "5th gen" project will work on both platforms. I'd be nice in the future if people specified *which* 5th gen the project is for (I'm sure 2k3 will appreciate it, too)

2. where is the turbo kit (and SC kit for that matter) for 2k2? The rumors are out there and we keep seeing posts about custom builds, but where's the kit? Redfly implied there's a kit in the works (I'm assuming "developing a turbo application" means each one won't be custom) but it's just hot air until it has a SKU/ordering number.

And again, nice car. Wanna help a brother do a custom SC job on a 2k2?

if u want one, why dun you spend some time to portotpye one for ur 2k2? why bother wasting time here and playing words with me on whether a 2k2 is not completely a 5th gen blah blah blah....

My initial post was simple....Kev is prototyping a turbo kit for his 2k...

Thanks for the compliment.

1) The 5th gen project will fit the 2k2+ with a bit of modifications. I'm not sure how different the exhuast piping is compared to 2k-2k1 models, but it should be close enough where you can take it to a muffler shop and have them cut off/weld on the sections to fit perfectly. You will, however, need to get past the pre-cats issue.

2) Be a pioneer and make a current kit fit.

A turbo application would be MUCH easier than a SC application.

and then in your second post you say nope...only 2k and 2k1/AE. I'm not playing with words, I'd just like if it people were more clear on which version of the 5th gen they're talking about. How would you like to read posts over and over talking about something you want for a 5th gen only to later find out it only fits on a 2k2/2k3?

and I'd prototype one if I had the money/time/knowledge. I don't, and neither do 99% of the people here, but I'm waiting for the kit so I can have mechanic friend install it. I'm computer friend. I pay mechanic friend in free computer work and beer. When there's a kit (preferably turbo) it'll get bought and installed.

and I'm not wasting my time. If you think it's wasting your time then kiss my blah blah blah and move on.

me = waiting for kit

Seriously, I really want a turbo kit. I was kidding about the SC (well, not really but you're in CA and I'm in New England...)

I use "search" to find out if it fits my vehicle, thank you and you should do the same.

and I'd prototype one if I had the money/time/knowledge.
you dont....I can kinda tell from all your other posts where u told people that their sig pics are too big, ask people to delete their newbie question threads, etc etc....I can kinda tell.

I don't
I know

again......1 person already has turbo for his 5th gen maxima (want to use search to find out which 5th gen?) another one is coming soon......it's up to you when a turbo kit is going to be installed onto your car. I

and I'm not wasting my time. If you think it's wasting your time then kiss my blah blah blah and move on.
no....you are quite entertaining...2k2wannabe, also a smart-****-wannabe.

I asked one guy to make his sig pic smaller; and please find me an *initial* post that mentions something fits on 5th gen but only 2k/2k1 *without* people asking and I'll change my religion and start praying at the alter of maxi-overdose. I'm sure there's one out there but they're not common.

All I'm asking is, if someone has info about 5th gen, please specify if it's *all* 5th gen or 2k/2k1 or 2k2/2k3... Nissan made this problem, not me.

Lastly, you want proof it's a problem? Ask asu174 what he's going through with a UDP.

Yes TORQUE LOSS... or better yet, lack of significant torque gains from our mods. If you compare dyno numbers from a SC'd max to a turbo'd max, you'll see the torque numbers are around 20-30 less than the HP# (check y2kevse or jhans114 dyno numbers) you'll see what I mean. Torque is where you really feel the low end power. My buddy has a 89 Merkur xr4ti mint condition with 300whp and around 300 torque and he would kick my SC'd @$$!! You need a neck brace just to ride in that car because the low end power is so sick! The turbo make all the difference. whp or over hp numbers may be around the same but the torque numbers increase significantly... Thats what I'm talking about!!!
Greg says a 5th Gen kit is in development and I'd expect that we'd see a 5th gen 2k-2k1 kit before a 2k2 or 2k3 one but... bot are supposed to be in the works. Cant wait to see the final result!

Kev,

As I've been learning about turbo's from my friend that has the xr4ti turbo, Its just frustrating how I have all these mods, more HP than him...even more hp than alot of people but no low end power...which means even with and SC and a 3.125, I'd still get my you know what handed to me by most people with a turbo! I'm anxious to see what the numbers will be like from your kit and the one Greg is going to sell... What kind of numbers was the guy you got the turbo from putting up?

Maybe the loss of low end torque is due to a decrease in exhaust back pressure. This is why Yamaha invented the exhaust valve many years ago, and Nissan uses a similar set up on the 5th. Gen Maxima. I realize that unrestricting it gives you bigger horsepower gains, but sometimes you need to comprimise.

I am curious about the driveability of a turbo. Unlike a supercharger the turbo won't spool up until a certain RPM, hence turbo lag. What would be really cool is a twin turbo set up. It would solve all problems. Although you would need to lower the compression ratio of the motor first, or it would detonate.

Well...

If you look at the 4th gen setup on custommaxima.com, that turbo setup has an external wastegate....if I'm correct, that allows the turbo to spool up right away instead of waiting until a certain rpm!!! Check it out!

A turbo, by nature, requires enough exhaust speed to produce any meaningful boost. I don't care what kind of waste gate is on it, it will still not produce instant power like a SC will.

If you dial the boost up high on a single turbo setup it will not be as friendly to drive as a SC car.

I did not mean exhaust valve. I meant to say the EXHUP valve that Yamaha has used on their bikes for years. This varies the backflow and optimizes it for different RPM. I am not sure of the Physics behind it, but it really does work to give you the best of both worlds, low end torque and high end power. This is why when you change the pipe on a R1 you just want the slip on and not the full system that bypasses the valve. The full system, headers, B pipe, and can, is great for a race system, but not as streatable.
