Extended warranty

I just purchased Maxima 2003 SE, the dealer was pushing for some Nissan Premium Protection plan....(1000$!) to have coverage up to 75K miles or 6 years...

Do you guys recommend getting an extended warranty?

If yes, is it better to get it through Nissan, or buy it from third party ?

Thanks.

One more question I had:
Can I use Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic oil? At what milege can I switch?

Now my family has the following cars:
1. Maxima 1996 GLE
2. Maxima 2003 SE <-- just got it
3. Acura 3.2 CLS 2001 <-- great car ! but all those transmission problems that other people had made me worried. Should probably get extended warranty

It depends on you, AFAIK it's a hit or miss situation. Some people have needed the extended warranty while others have gone way above and beyond w/o any problems.

Normally it's better to get the extended warranty from a third party since it allows you to find the right one for your needs. As for the Nissan warranty you just mentioned, it can be had for a couple hundred dollars cheaper. I have the same extended warranty and got it for $800 which i can terminate and get my money back anytime before my regular warranty runs out.

My daughter got the 7 year 100k Nissan Protection Plan when she bought her 2001 Altima GLE for $586, the MSRP was $1500. I used to work at the dealership so we got the car and Protection plan at cost. Also the plan was bumper to bumper. Huge mark up in plans, offer him $700 for the 7 year 100k plan. Anything close to that price and I'd get it. Newer Maxima's appear a little more problematic than earlier ones.

Good question! Corvette, Mercedes Benz and Porsche all come with synthetic oil in engines from factory. I would probably switch at first oil change if I bought a new car now.
