How Strong are our 6spd Transmissions????

I have been playing over in the 4thgen section, and I noticed a lot of tranny failures. I personaly went through two transimssions in my automatic '95 SE. I was curious if Nissan has improved their transmissions for 2k2. I now own a 2k2 6spd. Are we going to start having tranny problems down the road, like 60 or 100k miles. I know some people have already had some, but I think that that was a rare case where something went wrong in the building process. I am more concerned with about all 6spd going out at a certain mileage, how long will they last. Any Suggestions????

I honestly think it's more likely to be driver abuse that causes tranny failure, not design or construction flaw. I have a 96 GXE auto with the same transmission your 95 had...and not a bad shift yet in 156,000 miles.

What mods did you have? Guys who beat on the car ALL the time and are running boost or NOS run the risk of having a problem, regardless of year, simply because of the added stress. The 4th gen transmissions were known to be a great improvement over the less reliable 3rd gen trannys, and I would expect that Nissan would only continue to improve in the 5th gen. Just maintain it well, and you should be ok.

The 6 speed transmissons are supposed to be very very strong according to an article I read not too long ago. I will try to find the magazine, but I think it was Super Street or something like that. Anyways the car was a Blitz modified Silvia over in Japan. They mentioned that the car used the same 6-speed in the new Maxima and soon to be found in other Nissan cars. I think the Silvia currently had about 450 horsepower. Blitz told the interviewer that they had tested and were confident the stock transmission could handle 600+ hp no problem. So I don't think any of us will be lucky enough to test the limits of our 6 speeds. As far as reliability down the road, who knows?

comparison

I don't feel its reasonable to compare auto transmission failures with manuals. The mechanics of each are so very different. Auto's require a great deal more service than a MT. My 89SE 5speed lasted till 140k before I ended up having to replace the clutch and rebuilt transmission (synchro went). Most autos do not last beyond 100k before having to be rebuilt.

Now as for the 6spd, I think its really too early to tell (although I am clearly hoping they are as reliable as my 5spd was).

Any luck tracking that down? I'd be interested in reading that.

What is the recommended change in your owner's manual for your kind of usage? Another point to consider is that changing MT fluid is pretty simple and inexpensive so why not do it?

I agree!! Changed to RedLine MT90 at 30k. Whole thing only took 15 minutes. Shifts are much smoother, especially in the winter. Lots of posts can be found by doing a SEARCH on "MT90".

I believe that Redline(which i have) is supposed to be changed every 50k or so. The factory fluid should be done at 30k-40k
