2nd to 1st Gear in AT

The weirdest thing happened last night. I was merging on the freeway and was in second gear. I accidently slipped it into 1st WITHOUT holding the button! Does anyone else have this type of problem? So weird...luckily I was quick enough to react before the tranny and pop it back into 2nd.

It's not aproblem. It's supposed to rowk that way. You dont always have to push the button.

Have you noticed that you can pull it from reverse to drive witout the button? Or from Drive to Neutral?

etc, etc...

Yeah, that feature is for those of us who envy a 5/6-speed so much that we manually shift our autos all day long.

Yeah I know about reverse to neutral to drive and etc. That's normal, but I had never encountered 2nd to 1st without using the button. Weird...guess I just have to get used to it and not blow up my tranny, haha!

I don't think the tranny will actually downshift unless it is in an acceptable RPM range....it may wait until rpm's come down and then shift a la your command...

Actually, it's just the opposite, if you put it in first, it's going to shift to first. Even if it causes it to bounce on the rev limiter. Sadly, I know from experience. I turned the OD off once while going about 122mph and redline for 3rd is 120mph. No damage or anything, if you've heard of engine breaking, that's what happened. Just a little jerk.

I've done it before, the car WILL downshift into 1st gear and you'll be bouncing off the rev limiter.

OUCH. Doesn't seem like it would be smart for it to do that...i mean to be designed that way with no safety switch..

Yeah I goofed and overshot "2"

You're correct, it isn't a safe design but I can also see some advantages in engine braking if the brakes fail.

Good point. My old truck wouldn't downshift until you slowed to a certain speed, you were safe to dwonshift at any speed, it would only do so if it could...good and bad perhaps.
