why not!
If Nissan claims that they get 5 additional HP out of bigger diameter exhaust piping in the AE and I30, and NOT the muffler. then I am going to get my piping from the cat back to the stock muffler mandrel bent with 2" diameter, and maybe I'll get those 5Hp and maybe more.
Stillen sells theirs for 249.00 but that's too much. I'll go to a muffler shop today to see how much they will charge.

MY 5TH GEN
I got a stillen y-pipe and a 3 inch(how do i get that inch symbol)custom cat-back with the stock muffler and it's not loud at all, only when you start the car you hear a growl then after it goes away, when i had my ractive dual exhaust straight threw muffler it was an amazimg sound not too loud but thats because i had two silencer tips put on. eventually i took it off because my dad didn't like it but when i had it on you felt much more power i could trip out in first and second very easily damn i miss that power.
Obviously you haven't been reading the board. I just got through posting about the Ravin exhaust system which is supposed to add 25 hp, but so far everybody here seems to think it'll only give you a 5 hp boost. Read my post for more info on it--> Ravin Exhuast System gives you 25 hp

I know about people talking about low end back pressure but when i put on the 3" catt-back there was a definite improvement to me i think some of that back pressure shiznet is false facts. As for my exhaust it wasn't that loud and the tips did indeed give it a better sound plus i still had my resonater remember (custom) i was thinking to put on another one with the straight threw muffler since my dad didn't like the the acceleration rumble but i took it off to please him(my dad's friend is the one who put it on and he races for a living plus he supes up rx-7s and he said a 3" would make a big difference.(don,t start with the naturally aspirated shiznet because i know about the release of back pressure means quicker spool up on turbo cars.

Baseline H22A Motor OLM-R "Predator"(218P)internal kit + GReddy SP exhaust, random 3.0" universal cat.
218hp @ wheels.
Exhaust used: Tri-Cone Exhaust Tuner(Muffler)
Climax Series.(CLX2.5C)
Piping: 2.5" stainless steel
240 @ wheels.
Both runs made @ 70 degrees F ambient, Humidity 30%-45%
How it works:
Fully active, and continually adjusts itself to maintain the proper flow rate...It's a FULLY TUNED exhaust taking advantage of WAVE TUNING. Locating the unit in the proper position is crucial, a TUNED LENGTH GRAPH is used to determine the correct distance from the face of the exhaust valve to the inlet of the Tri-Cone unit. The length is based solely on the ADVERTISED degrees of Cam Duration of the exhaust event. Don't believe me call David Wynn @ OLM-R and ask about the Tri-Cone Muffler.(If you want the # email me.)

TRUST ME ON THIS WHEN I PUT ON THE 3 INCH I FELT MORE POWER AND ALOT OF LOW END POWER IF YOU LOOK AT ONE OF MY POSTS ABOVE I SAID I COULD EASILY TRIP OUT IN FIRST AND SECOND NOW I CAN'T DON THAT SO EASILY TRUST ME THAT "SHIZNET" WORKS BTW DID YOU GET MY E-MAIL ABOUT THE EXHAUST.THAT'S ALL THE PROOF I NEED SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO BELIEVE ME
i e-mailed you about your exhaust you know the special one you have on your car anywayz my dad's friend bent the pipe to match everything correctley like i said before "custom" if you don't believe me come to ajax ontario and e- mail and i will even give you look see when and if we meet up somewhere i am begining to believe you don't believe

Good point about the 2-1/2" piping, yo . . .
My first attempt at a catback system was 2-1/2" crush bent piping. I lost count of the number of trips I had to make to the muffler shop to try to get rid of the banging and clanging. I finally just gave up, ripped out the crush bent piping, and installed 2-1/2" mandrel bent piping instead. The second install took two guys over 1-1/2 hours to perform. I mean those guys were in there with calipers making certain the exhaust wouldn't rub against anything. They did a superb job, but it does raise the question of whether it would be possible to install 3" mandrel-bent piping without having it bang and clang against the undercarriage.
My guess is that you could get away with 3" piping along some of the exhaust run, but sooner or later you'd have to crush the pipe to prevent it from rubbing. For my money, I'd rather install smaller exhaust piping of a constant diameter than larger piping crushed to fit.

A cat-back exhaust will NOT give you 25 hp. In fact, I don't think any exhaust mod will get you 25 hp. Perhaps getting new headers, a y-pipe, and getting rid of the cat will give 10 or 15, but 25 is ridiculous. If all it takes is an exhaust to get you 25 hp, no one would get a SC or NOS. The most a cat-back exhaust will give you is maybe 5 or 10 hp in the high end. You may even end up losing some low-end power.
