new rotor question

I just had the x-drilled and slotted rotors installed at the local shop and as I was driving home there is a rubbing/grinding noise and when I got home(approx. 1 mile) there was a bad smell coming from all 4 brakes. Is this normal with new rotors? I didn't brake hard and drove the car normal. I did use my old porterfield r4s pads but they only have 1 year on them. Did I do something wrong or will this noise go away. Thanx David P.S. I did try search and did not find an answer.

Could be residual brake dust from the pads. Are the rotors plated? Check the rotors and observe the color. They should not be discolored. If you see a brownish, burned color then it might be brake dust burned on the rotor.

You want to break in the rotors. Do this by making gradual slow stops and slowly building up on those stopping harder. Give time between stops to let the rotors cool. A business district in the off hours works best for this.

Good luck and I hope the smell goes away.

you got new pads also right? It will take a couple hundred miles for the pads to seat on the rotors... give it some time and take it easy on the brakes for a little while at least.

I got the rotors form southwest autoworks and they are a brembo rotor. They are a silver color almost like stock. They are not the coated rotors. Is this a disadvantage? Happy to say after driving a few more miles and doing some gradual stops the smell has gone and the noise is fading but still very noticable especially thru turns(at slow speeds)

I had new pads and front rotors put on and they squeaked quite a bit until just recently......now they just squeal a bit when I apply the brakes

My wife has a 99 Wrangler and just had new pads and rotors put on...talk about noise! Flipping think sounds like it has crickets!

Guy who put it on said they are thick pads and the humid conditions we have be having really contribute to the noise...he said it would go away eventually...seems to have a bit but is this guy yanking my chain?

New rotors have a machined finish to them. As they break in (300 miles or so) that finish will become more polished and your noise should go away. Keep in mind that you will hear a bit more noise from them as the holes and slots swipe the pad. Thats normal.
