GXE audio conversion possibilities

GXE audio conversion possibilities
Does anyone know / have any experience with converting the lame am/fm tape deck receiver from a gxe to a better stock head unit? dunno why, but i would just prefer to keep the interior clean and stock looking. I know going to the bose system would be a huge project (speakers, tweeters, etc.)
Anyways, if anyone has done such a task (if i am off my rocker, i won't get angry if you tell me) please let me know. also, if anyone has a stock unit they are interested in selling, let me know on that too..
thanks a bunch...

now i have the pioneer deh 3400 HU cd am fm with remote ...which I love
as long as you also buy a wiring harness...it's very easy to install

Like ms.thicknes, I just replaced the tape player with a pioneer headunit. If you want to stay stock, you can get a 2k "premium" headunit (with CD player) but you'll also need the other vent assembly to go with it. You could also try a stock CD/Tape headunit from a 95-99. I'm pretty sure they're just plain double DIN (don't need new vent assembly) and the wiring harness is the same too. You can find them on ebay every once in a while.

yeah, after looking at the center stack a little closer (it was in traffic today, probably not too intelligent) i noticed that the radio housing is not seperate from the vent piece. so...forget a bunch of that...I think I might go with what ms. thickens got...
thanks for the replies...

i just replaced my stock unit for an alpine 7894 mp3 player.
f'n awesome. i would recommend alpine gear to anyone.
but to answer your question, i don't think it would be too tough to swap for another oem unit. you can find em on ebay or even call your local junkyard to do a search. you can buy the headunit, vents, whatever.

my car came with that tape player too. Few reasons I didnt go replace it with "higher-end" stok H.U: aftermarket units add more of a character to your car, better sound and controls, and if you are going to have it installed at place like Best Buy, they will put the old unit back on for free when you'll be selling your car. If you are concerned about your aftermarket unit stolen, most of the modern units come with excellent security features.

Even if your new H/U has a security (CODE) feature... after they steal it, how will you know the code really worked? And in the end, you're still out of a H/U.
