Don't wait. Depending on how much the ride height changed right after the swap your tires will start to develop a bad wear pattern that can't really be reversed. But be prepared to re-align it some time down the road as the springs settle a bit. This period of time is somewhat variable and depends on the specific springs, the condition of your shocks/struts, and on your driving conditions (load, roads, etc.), but could easily be over 1000 miles. I'm still waiting on a set of much-heavier-than-stock front springs I recently put on the Malibu in my sig to do just this.

A shop will drop and align it the same day.

If you drop it on your own, get it done in a weeks time.

How difficult is it to install the springs on your own and what tools are needed? Is it the same for both the 4th and 5th gen?

I heard that you only need an alignment after major drops, but I have never had the car aligned and my maxspeeds have been on since Feb. No unusual tire wear either.

alignment

My neighbor did my install and I took the car to an alignment shop immediately. It needed it according to the data they showed me. I plan on going back for a check up after 30 days or so (it's free).

I would wait about a week for the springs to settle. If you get it done immediately then after the springs settle it may be out of alignment again. My car drove fine right after I got them put on but after a week or so it started pulling to the right so I got them aligned then.
