Cat back piping vs. just the muffler

Hey I have a question. What exactly is the difference I will see in getting 2 1/2 inch piping from my Cat back to the muffler rather than just having the muffler installed on the stock piping. I just picked up a Magnaflow dual 4" tip muffler and want to know what the best thing to do is. HELP!!

At a minimum - have a new b-pipe made up. That's the big restriction right now, not the muffler or the fact that it's 2" piping. If you want a custom bent 2.5" b-pipe w/o resonator, I've got one that I just had made up for my car for sale. PM me for more info. I'm taking it off because I bought a Cattman Cat-back system

I have just a muffler.. and it will give you no gain. A full catback will give you a minimal gain. I just did it for the sound and looks....

That shows how bad that crimp is on the Bpipe. Major restriction.

With the resonator removed and a straight pipe in place, how much louder did the muffler get?

Not really louder per say, but more similar to a GTP or older Lumina. "Throaty", more like a V6.

Are there any performance gains with smoothing out the exhaust path? I don't want to replace the muffler (I like a quiet ride) but I would like to remove some the additional crap in the exhaust path, especially the crimped pieces.

B-pipe restrictions = less HP at high RPMs

but also likely more torque in the mid-RPM ranges..has NE1 done back-to-back dyno runs that can show the before/after changes in HP and TQ to confirm/disprove my theory?

I would much prefer to have a fatter torque band in the mid-range than four/five more horses in the last 1000 rpms -which I get to once in a blue moon so...make choices accordingly....
