5th gen competition

I wanted to spark a conversation about the 5th gens leading competition in the auto world. Recently my grandmother mentioned she needs to buy a new car and was considering a Toyota Avalon. Until I showed her a side by side comparison of the two cars. The maxima had plenty more hp and torque, more head and leg room up front, wheels that are 2 inches larger, and a lower price.

So what would the 2k2/2k3's biggest competition be? And I'm not talking about the CL type S 6 speed, cause I don't think she's gonna need to be tearing around town too much. Well maybe...

But instead, what cars are alternatives in the same price range that offer plenty of interior room, comfortable ride, and decent power under the hood?

How about the 3.5SE Altima or the more affordable 2.5S Altima? Might as well stay with Nissan...

Don't be so worried about hp/tq unless it's for you, find her something really comfortable like an Audi A4 1.8T. If she can afford a Maxima, she can afford those most likely. That caris really small but it has more features and the handling is a lot better. Also, better service.

Toyota avalon is FAR superior over the maxima in terms of older people and comfort..

Its much more expensive, however the v6 is really smooth and very quiet.. The tranny shifts seamlessly, the interior is far better looking than any maxima ever..

The car is also much larger inside than the maxima especially teh rear seats...

Its a good looking old peoples car. and best of all Toyotas can be had with the LONGEST extended warranty in the business.. 7 years 120,000 miles coverage.....

Its refined over the maxima.. Maximas in general especially the fifth gen is just problematic and harsh for older people...

For your mom, go for the Avalon...

For yourself, get a G35 LOL..

If you compare the size of the maxima and avalon, it looks like the maxima has slightly more room up front (head, hip, and leg), but the avalon definately has more room in the back.

Now we are getting some good points posted, thanks

My folks (early 70's) are picking up their new Avalon tomorrow. I agree...older folks car, more refined and more expensive. I'll have a chance to drive it this weekend..should be interesting.

the new accord is roomy and comes with 240hp (wonder how's their torque?)

otherwise, the closest match will be G35....for the power, but not too roomy as maxima.

212 ft-lbs @ 5000 rpm.
Why is it Honda can never make some torque down low?

The new Matrix XRS doesn't make it's peak HP(180*) until 7800rpm! it redlines at 9000rpm!

Who would actually use that peak hp in normal driving conditions

Oh hell yeah.... Apparently Toyota has started making Honda engines. I wouldn't mind sending that little Matrix into the 10,000RPM range on special occasions.
