1999 Alero auto vs. 2001 Max auto

I know this thread may be a stupid question and all....but who would win in that race??? I have a friend that SWEARS his 1999 Oldsmobile Alero WILL STOMP my 2001 Max automatic. i havent had the chance to run him straight up yet....we had a run at a light that he got to like a few seconds after i did and didnt have to totally stop at it and kept rolling by me and then gunned it, so basically he started at 10 to 15 miles per hour and i started at 0. thats no race, but he swears he can out run me easy. just wondering about this...its really gettin on my nerves, kuz now he goes around sayin hell walk a 2k2 like a damn dog and i know that aint happenin! i just wanna run him straight up one time and see what the deal is. we are both stock except i have the OSHAI (ghetto airbox mod ). just let me know somethin. thanks!

I'm guessing he has the 3.4L V6? 170 hp compared to 222 hp...

I'm guessing low 16's, since he's automatic.

Well I owned and drove a 99 Alero for 55,000 miles. Now I own a '03 Max. Let me just say that it would destroy the Alero.

sigh... sometimes you just can't get across the idiots. I had some guy that told me with only 200 bucks, he got his civic in the 14's on the quarter mile.. I almost spit blood.

I raced my sister's friend is her alero from a light, from a roll... murdered that thing like there was no tomorrow. It was a older 96 ish version... somewhere around there.. plus I don't thinks she took care of it much either

My friend's camaro is a 3.4L V6 with 160 hp and 200 ft-lbs of torque.. the Alero is 3.4L V6 with 170 hp and 200 ft-lbs of torque.

The camaro is automatic, and it does high 16's. I think the Alero might weigh a little less than a Camaro, but obviously I think the guy doesn't have a leg to stand on.

i almost had the same exact scenario - except my friend had a v6 grand am (same engine basically), and i have a 2k2 auto. he SWORE to the high heavens that he'd beat me - this is after i told him i had a an 80hp advantage over him. he wouldn't listen - he said something about american cars having all the low end, and from a stop, he'd kill me as a result (he really just didn't know what he was talking about - i guess he thinks all import engines = motorcycle engines). i'm not normally inflamatory like this, but you need to just shut ignorant people like that up - just race him and don't say a word - that'll make him feel worse than if you rub it in his face.

you should easily beat him, and he won't stand a chance against any 2k2. in case you're curious, my grand am friend an i ran - so much for his low end, i had so many carlengths on him by the time i hit second gear, we just shut down shortly thereafter.

I thought I saw those in the mid to upper 7 second range for a 0-60 time. Thats not far from an auto stock max........I think to 60 or so it may be close but in the 1/4 you would win. Didn't some have 200hp? Maybe not but whatever. A friend of mine has one and its a piece of junk. Leaks water in many places and the trim around the headlights is off like 1/2 inch in various places....looks like a 2 year old molded the front facia.

Stoplight to stoplight, he might hang off your rear bumper. Anything further than that, you'll walk away from him. Mom had one of those for a while. Wimpy past 60mph.

The best times for an Alero 3.4 in the mags were 7.7 / 16.0. Average times were low-8's / low/mid-16's. If I was at home I'd run a CarTest, but I'm not, and I never have been able to get that program to work on my laptop at work.

Anyhow, never underestimate American pushrod (or 4th Gen VQ ) low-end. I wouldn't be surprised if he got a jump on you off the line, but after that your DE-K will walk him 222HP @ 6400rpm vs 170 @ 4800. The Max is a little heavier, but you'll still have a much better power-to-weight ratio than him. Just make sure that you manually shift and it won't be pretty for him

BTW, this idiot probably beat a fully modded older non-VTEC riced-out Prelude automatic, and not a Prelude that's actually fast. Yeah, 14's in an Alero. Not without a shia load of mods!

Classic **** talker saying he's beaten people he's never even raced just trying to get attention from only god knows who in his speed racer alero Just go kick his a$$!

Yeah, I'll run a CarTest when I get home. It's $40 from www.cartest2000.com Awesome program. Nismo87SE and I both use this program *ALOT* and it's also quite accurate.

Then either he wasn't manually shifting (makes a BIG difference on DE-K's) or his VIAS was busted. Or the Grand Am had a helluva lot more than just K&N. It could have had pulleys and some other stuff too.

Paul2kGXE ran his 2k auto stock at a 15.8 w/o manually shifting. Later he ran a 15.4 w/manual shifting, but he added an OSCAI too, but that was it. I tried to verify this for sure but his maxima stuff is gone from his site, so I'm just going from memory.

He let me take his car for a spin once and I let er rip with the computer doing the shifting and it really didn't feel any faster than my Accord V6 at the time. But then he got in the drivers seat and showed me what the car can really do with some manual shifting at redline and I was like BIG difference!

The DE-K needs every last bit of revs it can get before shifting. Those 5900-6000rpm standard shift points were for the 4th Gen's, but I guess they never bothered to update them for the 00 models to something more optimal for that engine.

i'll chime in since my name was mentioned.

i ran a grand am SE 3.4L V6 with a K&N drop-in and i had a 180lb passenger in the car filming the run.

here are the times. i manually shifted 1 to 2 at a tach indicated 6100rpm. manually shifted 2 to D(O/D off) at a tach indicated 6300rpm (now that the track has closed for the season, i find out that i can shift 2 to D at redline on the tach since my tach is too fast by about 400rpm)

me
r/t: .790
60ft: 2.436
1/8 ET: 10.347
1/8 MPH: 70.32
1/4 ET: 15.855
1/4 MPH: 88.24

grand am v6
r/t: .941
60ft: 2.287
1/8 ET: 10.197
1/8 MPH: 69.34
1/4 ET: 15.772
1/4 MPH: 87.53

and my VIAS is not busted as shown by this dyno graph

went to the same track the week after and, with no changes except lowering the tire pressure in the front to 22psi, i got a 15.44@90 (with the same short-shifting from 2 to 3).

maybe the track is slow here (the pavement isn't exactly the greatest) but the 3.4L V6 isn't exactly something to sneeze at

damn, why did my friend (grand am v6) lose so badly (see post above). if 2k/2k1 maxes are roughly equal to v6 alero/grandam, i would not think that a 2k2 auto would be that much quicker than a 2k1 auto.

yeah he was short shifting a little! he was shifting at 6800 1-2 and 6600 2-3. His best run that day manual shifting is 15.5.

You could always use the honda trick and race him from a roll

Is manually shifting an auto really needed? Whenever I floor the Pathfinder it shifts right at redline, with a perfect downshift. Did Nissan not get their tranny working right until 2002?

If the computer shift points at WOT are not optimal, then manual shifting will help. For maximum performance, you want to keep your revs centered around the peak horsepower point, which in a VQ30DE-K is 6400rpm. Since this is practically right at redline and the rev-limiter, you can't take full advantage of the DE-K's power. It takes another hit when the shift points were set at 6000rpm. You never get to 222HP in a 00-01 automagic unless you shift for yourself.

CarTest2000 results:

99 Alero 3.4 Auto
00 Maxima 3.0 Auto (w/6600rpm shifts)

0-60 mph
Max (6.6k): 7.4s
Max (6.0k): 7.6s
Alero (opt): 8.2s

1/4 mile
Max (6.6k): 15.6 @ 89
Max (6.0k): 15.8 @ 88
Alero (opt): 16.2 @ 84

0 - 1/2 mile
Max (6.6k): 24.5 @ 110
Max (6.0k): 24.8 @ 109
Alero (opt): 25.7 @ 103

0 - 1 mile
Max (6.6k): 39.4 @ 128
Max (6.0k): 40.0 @ 124
Alero (opt): 41.6 @ 120

The Alero basically gets owned, and the CarTest data more or less lines up with the published mag data. Just look at how the Maxima stretches out on the longer runs. It just keeps going and going and going

I rented a Chevy Malibu 3.1 after my Accord V6 got wrecked, and I managed to do some Ghetto-Tech testing with it. Even though it only has the 3.1 engine, it still has 170HP (@ 5200rpm, vs 4800 on the 3.4) so it's just optimized for better top-end. (190 lb-ft vs 200 in the 3.4). I got an 8.2s 0-60 as well.

As far as this Grand Am running 15.6 @ 88 with just a K&N, I think that guy might have been pulling a fast one on you. Chances are he had K&N, oh and pulleys, oh and TB mod. Either that or the engine is under-rated, which is possible, since the same 3.4L engine in the Aztec makes 185HP/205TQ. That said, this Alero could also be running the same engine, also under-rated. GM is definitely known for under-rating engines. (hint: LS-1) I tried to find some 3.4L dynos at www.gmpowertalk.com but of course there weren't any for that engine that I could find.

So who knows...

People look down at their speedometer at the end of whatever straightaway they're on and just automatically ASSume that it's 100% accurate, not knowing that most US speedo's are 5-10 mph fast at those speeds.

From there it goes into a nasty downward spiral of more ASSumptions which leads someone to believe that their car is faster than another, even though they have 50HP less than that car.

....

All I have to say is that I rented an Alero with the 4-cylinder(missed the DAMN new Altima by 10mins.) for A WEEK to go to Disneyland this summer and it was POS slow azz dog. I SUCKED down gas so fast, because I was either at idle or WOT. That was the WORST rental car I've ever had, but pretty close to the gutless 3.1L Buick Skylark I rented last christmas.

A better race would be against the Olds Intrigue. Now that car had some SERIOUS ***** for an automatic 3.5L.
