Almost passed out when I heard my insurence cost!
Almost passed out when I heard my insurence cost!
Ok, so I recently acquired a 2k Maxima(love it so far), and today I went to get it insured. I am 18 right now, no tickets or accidents, and I was shocked when the cheapest possible full coverage insurence set me back $5300 a year! Some companies wanted to charge me $8,000+!
I was just wondering what you guys pay and what companies you use, by the way I live in San Francisco, so I'm sure that has something to do with the high cost.
Looks like I'm gonna be broke as a joke for quiet a while due to the fact that I'm just going to be working to pay the damn insurence.

Man, that's a lotta green...best way to lower the cost is to double your age and move to the middle of nowhere!!
Seriously, though, keep that record spottless. Sounds like you've shopped around but keep looking...might find a little better deal somewhere.
Welcome to the org!!
btw..try the search for 'insurance cost'.
some things to help.....
If you have it in your area, try Liberity Mutual. They have some of the best rates.(I live in NJ with some of the highest premiums!)
Try to just add yourself to your parents policy, if possible.
Increase your deductable to at least $1,000. (this can really help reduce the premium)
Ask if you can take a safe driving coarse in exchange for a reduction in the premium.
Some companies will even reduce the premium if you have good grades in school.
Hope one of the suggestions helps!

I am not going to knock on GEICO but I didnt find their rates any better than Progressive or Prudential. I am with Prudential now.. not the best company in terms of customer svce but I just like my rates low and car insured (as required by law: only reason). I did find they have good rates if you can sacrifice the imcompetence of some of their cust svce reps.

I did that and got my insurance dropped by 35%
Re: Almost passed out when I heard my insurence cost!
Alright man this is what you do. I'm 19 now, but got my 2002 when I was 18. An issurance company wanted to charge me $6000 a year. Put your mom on your car for insurance if you drive a better car than her and put yourself on her car. My insurance comp. told me to do that. We even switched to a different comp. and now my insurance is lower than it was on my old 94 max
Save 15% my ***, those bastards at Geiko wanted at least $7200, one company(Farmers) even had the nerve to demand $9800(not even kidding!). Apparently according to CA insurence laws, until a driver is 23 years of age they are still considered to be inexperienced and changed in insurence are marignal(if any), but they can always just go up.

Swapping cars with your parent makes sense too. You aren't putting anyone at greater risk since you're both required to report all drivers in household anyway.
I'm in NJ and CURE wanted to charge me just over $2k
Thankfully getting married has it's benefits...was able to get on Manufacturers at less than half the cost...about $950.
Funny thing is I was paying $600 or so a year liability only on my '87 Monte.

Horsepower has a price...
There's a reason Ford Escorts are cheap to insure. Though I have to admit, that's a harsh price to pay when you're only 18. Don't worry, I think your rates drop when you turn 24. Until then, all you can do is shop around for the cheapest rates and avoid those speeding tickets.

When I was 18 with my mustang GT, I had to be on my parents policy.

I think it's crap that they can charge that much. I'm gonna get sexist here for a sec, but if you were a chick I bet it wouldn't be that much. I paid about $2500 a year when I was 18 with a clean record. My female cousin, of the same age (born on the same d@mn day) on the other hand paid $1000 a year and totaled 2 cars with $3k of damage to a 3rd one (3 different accidents, all her cars, lord knows what she did to the other cars involved).
So I feel your pain, but take heart in the fact that it will go down eventually. Insurance is a scam, they take your money like it's going out of style then if you do have to make a claim drag their feet.

SteV, I do believe it. Car insurance is the biggest racket in the country now besides the college book scam.
They can abitrarily charge you whatever the hell they want, and thanks to the advent of No-fault, even if your rear-ended by a drunk your insurance can go up and you *could* be dropped from your policy if you have prior events.
EDIT: My car got stolen back in '97, not only the did the insurance decline my comprehensive claim due to a miscommunication, they also tried to raise my rates (They did raise my parents rates cause I was on thier policy).
Needless to say I give the big F*CKYOU whenrever I see anything that has to do with Prudential.

All else pales in comparison to THAT scam!!

Yeah, but I've never heard a Homeowners policy dropping you after 10 years without a claim because they felt "your due for an accident" (common practice by Prud.)

You can get car insurance anywhere.
Since you're in California, go to 21st Century Insurance and get a quote online. I switched from State Farm to 21st Century and saved over $400...then again, I'm an "experience" California driver.
If not, do what all the other .ORG members are saying and go on your parents' insurance. Good luck!

Try Progressive....for my wifes 2002 Saturn and my 2000 Maxima we are paying 1350.00. Not bad but still expensive for New Hampshire.
8k????
Your 2k max probably has a trade value of about 2k more than that...holy dogstuff!

Re: Almost passed out when I heard my insurence cost!
Sell the Maxima and buy a 95 Alty. Invest the $10,000k difference, and the $3300 per year in insurance savings. Assuming 8% interest you will have $80,343 at the age of 28, and lower insurance premiums. Then you can afford just about any foreign or American car you want.

I second that opinion...
