I am getting HID's in my foglights installed this week, I have one question...

Is there any risk with the temperature on the stock Foglight housing?

Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

 

Can you please document your install? I assume your using an H4 HID kit in your H3 stock fogs? Which kit are you going with? Are you doing the install yourself? Will them need to be aimed somehow (in the install?) Are you 2k-2k1 or 2k2-2k3? I think there is a difference in the lense?

 

The HIDs should be cooler, if anything. The HID bulb requires 35w whereas don't the H3s use 55w,65w?

BTW - I'm not so sure HIDs in the fogs are such a good idea. Foglights are meant to help see through fog - yellow light is much better for that than the white/bluish light of HID.

 

Not necessarily, They make H3 kits as well.

Not much fog around my area anyway, I just want a lot of light.

 

When there is a 9005 kit you can put hids in your high beams as well.

Once again, the bodyshop will be installing them and the HID system on the fogs will be the same as my stock headlights.

Soonly after I will be doing the rewire to have only my HID fogs on along with my parking lights, I hope it will look good.

Not true, color temperature has nothing to do with inclement weather visibility. On other hand putting and HID burner into the housing that is not designed for it will affect the light dispersion and may or may not affect visibility.

Woo hoo. I am getting senons for my fogs and going to set them up either to run like headlights or paint the lens yellow and I will get that IS300 fog like look. Are you guys sure that the size of 2k2 Maxima xenon is H3?

 

Hold on cowboy. The Fogs for the 2k2 Max are H3. I don't know what the headlights are. I'd say H4.

 

I just got HID's installed in my 2k2 fogs.

The housing does need modification for the bulbs to fit in, I saw them install it and they had to expand the hole where the bulb fits in order for the HID bulb to fit.

I love the HID's in the fogs, they give out more light than my headlights.:-)

 

Made the hole bigger? I think the only modification is to push a metal piece back a bit that is inside the housing. Just using a pencil with an eraser on the end will do the trick. What kit did you go with? Try to post up a bunch of different pics?

Where exactly were the ballast and everything else mounted?

 

how's the beam pattern with the HID fogs? does is shine far ahead or just light up the immediate front of the vehicle?

The front of the car looks really nice now, the foglights give out more light than the headlights, must be since the fog housing is so small and the light has less space to spread before being filtered through the glass. I got the same kid we got on our 2k2 headlights so the color matches perfectly.I don't know exactly where they put the ballasts since I didn't watch the whole install but I know they had to open up the black piece that's part of the housing either because of the connector to the bulb or the bulb itself.

As far as beam pattern, the fogs light up the immediate front of the car as well as to the side, since when I turn on my fogs they light up buildings to the left and right, I am very happy with the beam pattern, total difference from just having bulbs on the fogs, one of the best and good looking mods in my mind.

 

What make? Hanabi? 7000k? 8000k? Can you take some pics?

So where did you get 2k2 headlights to hack for fogs? That is expensive project unless you got a "deal" on the hids? Considering H3 retrofit kits are around $350-$400?

 

HID's in the fog's makes for a terrible beam pattern. In my I30 the lights where blinding on comming traffic. Just something to think about.

 

I was in an accident, I posted the thread a while back, the car needed all front panels and hood and headlights, but after the accident the lights even with crooked and with the housing broken, they were still on, so I asked the guy in the bodyshop to order me a new set of OEM hid's for the headlights and to swap the old headlight set into the fogs.

The beam pattern is good, but they are strong, but I want everyone to see me when I'm on the highway, and in the city I live in, alot of stop signs are pretty blind, so if people see a lot of light coming down the street, they will know a car is coming.I get a lot of compliments on them, I am happy with my decision.

 

for some reason, putting HID in fog housing doesn't make sense to me, but i can't justify it. Putting HID in driving housing does make sense. Maybe cuz fog lights are supposed to be low and diffuse...and the upper 1/2 of the beam is blurred so you don't blind oncomming traffic (or yourself!)

But HID in driving lights would be awesome cuz you could cast light very very far and wide at the same time. Whereas in fogs, you're throwing light to the floor and not extending your range.

I'm thinking about putting HID in my $19.99 driving lights i got from kragen.

btw, do not buy from misterjung. he's got the worst customer service. i bought from him and didn't like the service i got...so i'm trying to get a refund. in addition, a volvo guy had a bulb burn out in 2 weeks...he can't even contact misterjung to get a replacement under the 18month warranty!
cheap price, quality kit/bulbs/ballast, but horrible service. u make the call.

Completely agree

I would get rid of my foglights altogether and put HID driving lights in their place. You get all the benefits of HID, and none of the penalties like glare, legal issues come inspection time etc.
