KYB AGX for 5th gens

i need to find some struts to go with my Ground Controls and i kind of want the luxury of the adjustables. so i was thinking koni yellows or KYB AGX.

i do have some questions though:

1st, would i need to buy the dustboot/bump stop pieces from Cattman or will the AGXs work just fine without them?

2nd, what exactly needs to be modified on the front strut mounting brackets to make them fit? is it something that will prevent my stock struts from fitting should i decide to put them back on?

i searched a little but i wanted to ask and get some straight answers.

I had this setup and the clunking noises were ridiculous. I don't think that the Ground Controls sit right on the rear perches because it is a 4th gen strut perch. People seem to have better luch with springs that are made for 4th gens on the KYBs. I have Progress springs on mine which are the same for 4th and 5th.

if you're going to run stock struts/shocks, there's no need for you to even run the 4th gen springs..

Yes. The Progress springs are the same part number for 4th and 5th gens. They will work on either.

Question on modifying the mounting brackets so the KYB adjustables will fit on the '02 Maxima: Will KYB honor any warranty claims if something goes bad on the strut and it was installed on a vehicle model (i.e. '02 Maxima) it was not specified for by the manufacturer?

This was one of the main reasons I went with Tokicos when I replaced my struts/shocks--- in spite of the bad rap they get from some members...

i don't think the company will honor the warranty on modified shocks. since the shock was made for one car and used on another, that changes story....

inspite of what you may have heard on forums about the Tokicos, the Tokicos are actually good shocks. i've had them for about 2 1/2 years and never had any complaints. yes, they ride softer than KYBs and Konis, but they are still good shocks. any shocks can blow. i've seen many people blow Konis...it's just personal preference.

i meant to ask you... are you running on modified kyb's?

newman: you can use the original stock dust boots, I tagged along for a couple of spring install meets with org members and they always used the stock dust boots since those overpriced ones from kyb never seem to fit right. THe bump stop.. I believe you have to grind like 2mm off of it to fit, or you can get the 4th gen bump stops.

SOmeone correct me if i'm wrong

You ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY need the stock isolation sleeves or it will creak and squeak like crazy. You need the front bottoms and the rear tops.

The stock isolation sleeves are the rubber pieces that wrap around the front bottom of the spring and the rear tops of the springs?
How about the modified Cattman KYB AGX's? What parts will i need to make them fit properly on a 5th Gen (2003)? Would Progress springs with 5th Gen Tokico blues be a great match-up? Any help will be greatly appreciated.....Thanx in advance.

Yes, those are the sleeves.

If you get the KYB AGX's, you should save yourself an extreme hassle and just buy the ones from Cattman. 5th gen KYB AGX's won't be available until fall 2003. If you can hold out that long, more power to you...... Personally, I needed them ASAP.

Search for Tokicos. They are not a good strut for a lowered car. I personally wold not get them.

Thanx for the reply asu174. I'm planning on running the modified fouth gen KYB AGX's and Progress spring set-up. Question is what parts will i need? Would i need the fourth gen front and rear strut mounts? Will i need the KYB dust coners? etc. Anyone who can give me a listing on what is needed or what specific parts i need to purchase from Cattman to make this suspension set-up work on my 2003 maxima your help will be appreciated. Thanx in advance.

I didn't understand what you were getting at. Literally, all I bought were the struts and springs. If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably spend the $50 on dustboots.

Also, you might want to buy the fourth gen FRONT only strut mounts. Personally, I'd just shave your 5th gen ones. You need to shave 2 mm off the thing that sticks out the bottom of the mount. Pretty easy with a grinding wheel. From what I understand, though, getting the front 4th gen ones to fit correctly is a pain. Shave what you've got.

The 5th gen rears will work just fine with no other modifications.

Sorry, I wasn't sure what you meant by "parts" before.

asu174: Thanx for the quick reply and info. So this is what is basically needed to run the modified Cattman KYB's and Progress springs:
1. Reuse the stock spring isolator sleeves( bottom fronts and rear tops)
2. Fourth gen Cattman modified KYB AGX's
3. Progress Springs
4. Front OEM 4th gen upper mounts. Reuse OEM 5th gen upper mounts for rear
5 KYB front and rear dust boot covers

Thats it?....Is it really true that the stock 4th gen upper mounts don't fit properly? Because i've heard they will just fit right in perfectly. Don't really want to grind away 2mm on the stock ones.(me and power tools don't get along) I'm bound to grind more than i'm supposed to.

You could always buy the 4th gen ones and bring them to the shop and explain to them that they should use whatever ones work better. My shop had a pretty bad time with the front end.......I'm not sure if it was only because of the mounts.
