REALLY IMPORTANT! Reliability?

Ok, i was reading that class action suit thread above about people want to sue Nissan for quality issues. I have a 2000 that I spent 22500 on 5 months ago and if there's going to be big problem with transmission etc. then i want to seel it. So far the only problem i have is a strut clunk noise over bumps that I have no idea how to fix. But I hear people talking about slipping transmissions and all sorts of stuff. I was always under the impression that the Maxima was one of the number one vehicles in terms of reliability, quality, performance, and durability. From what I've heard you all say, that's nto necessarily true. I only have 32xxx on my car right now, so it shouldnt have problems period, but later on in its life, i cant afford problems. I bought this car with the thought that I could own it for 6-8 years without any problems and if this isnt true, i might as well sell this and buy a toyota or honda. I have a 1995 Grand AM V6 as well and I havent even had as many problems (alternator at 147K)with that as Ive heard you guys say you have with your 5th gens. Tell me what you guys think or know about how reliable these cars are. The performance part is true, but that doesnt matter to me if the tranny blows and i cant take advantage of the performance anyway. What are all the problems you guys have and how frequent are they? I want to keep my maxima but only if its going to be extremely trustworthy considering i paid 22500 for a 2 year old car with 25K on it. So if you could help me I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks!

Brad

$22k for a 2 year old Max? You could've bought a 2k2 for that money.

Anyway, the items you listed fall under the TSB stickies and will be fixed by Nissan.

Aside from that i don't foresee any problems with your vehicle. Take note that a good amount of people from this forum are enthusiasts both in name and action so cars owned by .Org'ers are subject to "more than average" wear and tear.

In addition to Mike's comments: people come here for answers when they have problems. That's why there are many threads about problems that they encountered. But it does not mean that Maxima have a bad reliability. We dunno wheather the tranny problem (for instance) happens every 1 out of 5 vehicles or every 1 out of 500 vehciles.

It's hard to determine a car's reliability by reading a forum and see what kinda problem people come up with.

well i paid 22500 total after the loan and everything...the sticker price was 20,500 and I got it to 19,000 through negotiations. I couldnt believe how spendy they were either, but I figured it was a good thing that it had such good resale value. I saw the NADA report and most of the SE's equipped like mine are still going for around 21000. I wouldve bought a 2002, but no resources. As far as the problems go, I hope you're right because while reading things in this forum I get this really bad feeling about my cars future. Don't get me wrong, so far this is the best sedan ever built...mostly because of the VQ, but the best sedan ever built doesnt necessarily always have to be reliable...just powerful. Its a great car so far, I just hope it continues to stay that way.
