Raced Corrado and a modded Civic
First, I would like to apologize for posting a racing thread, I've tried to not post these in a while.....but I guess I'm bored now.
Well, my first race was vs the Civic. It's a 98 or so with CAI and cat back. I was curious to race him, since I'm auto, and I've had trouble with 5 speed Hondas in the past. (I lost to a stock 92 Accord 5 speed when I had intake and cat back). Anyways, I sorta know this kid, so we go to this empty light late at night. Well, I torque brake off the line, and pull ahead a little bit. As first gear slowly winds itself out, my lead steadily increases. From 5000-6500 RPM, my lead became quite large, say 2 cars. I got through 2nd gear, and by 80 or so I had about 6 or so cars on him, so I let off. So he decides to pull a ricer fly-by on me, but I just floor it again, and he doesn't even get past my rear bumper before I match his speed, then continue to walk him again. It's nice to know my puny auto can whoop modded Civics
My second race took place tonight. I was just out driving, enjoying my car, since I've been inside the last 3 days with mono. Anyways, I see this nice VW Corrado drive by kinda fast. I go past him a little bit, and he revs. I take off from about 40 and from there to 80 we were pretty much even. I was once again pleased with my auto. But it left me wondering, what engine did he have? I know he was stick since his rear dropped pretty hard whe it shifted, and I didn't see a muffler, but he did sound kinda loud (downpipe?)...Did those come with the 1.8T or VR6? What do they run in the 1/4 mile?
To top off this thread of poor taste, I'm gonna ask a dumb question. My friend got a GTI 337 a few months ago, and wants to race me. I know its basically a regular GTI with nice rims, seats, 6-speed, and other stuff. They have 180 HP right? I'm wonder what would be my best way to race him? From a stop? Hes probably not very good at launching yet, so I think this may be a good idea....or from a 25 or 60 mph roll? How is the top end on those things? I have a feeling he's gonna beat me, and I KNOW to not let him take me into some corners....that would be certain death for me....any input is appreciated. Thanks.

the Corrado probably had a vr6. could have possibly had a 1.8t but I doubt it. If you're going to go against a 02 or 03 1.8, go from a stop; it's hard to launch a 1.8t, because it take a second for the turbo to spool up, then when it does, there's alot of wheel spin and torque steer. I would suggest not to do a rolling start, as the 337 should be able to take you, or at least hang with you. As far as top end, after about 80 or 90, the stock exhaust has trouble breathing, and after 5500 RPM, the 1.8t doesn't make any usable horsepower (unless your friend gets a chip). And yes, the 1.8t makes 180 hp and 174 lbft of torque. But that power comes early (1900 RPM) and holds steady to about 5500 RPM. Throw in a chip, power is 210-215 hp (crank) and 245-255 lbft torque (crank).

This is true about the G60 (about 155hp). However, 1.8t's have begun to be transplanted into the C, but i doubt that the C that 95maxrider went against had a 1.8t. Could have been the G60, but more than likely an earlier VR6 (178hp).

The weight (depending on the year of the Corrado) should be similar (either the same or the C might be 100 lbs lighter). I'm going to have take back what I said about the C being a VR6 though, 0-60 times (mag racing) were about 6.4 sec, 1/4 15.0 sec, very similar to the 337. A G60's performance was an 8.8 0-60 time.
Given the race that you had, I would say that the C probably had a G60 in it.
