***** If you've been looking for a performance clutch for your 2K Max as I have...PLEASE REPLY HERE w/ your email address...I'm starting a list which may help our chances w/ these companies...THANKS IN ADVANCE. *****
-----------------------------------------------------------

I've been doing a little research in my quest for a performance clutch for my 2k Max...so i can begin the serious engine work i have in store....

I spoke to a few different places....

Clutch Masters told me that they would be willing to make a custom unit for me for approximately $300-400 but I would have to send them my disk & pressure plate. I may consider this because i'm planning a certain amount of downtime anyway while building my beast. I've had previous experience w/ Clutch Masters and found their clutches to be excellent quality....they have my trust.

I also spoke to Centerforce who stated that they already have a part number for the 2k+ Maxima clutches and will be releasing their Stage I and Dual Friction clutches for our cars in the first quarter of 2001. I inquired what type of power it would hold and they said it would hold 90% more power which equates to about 400HP...I highly doubt that. I told him my plans were to add about an extra 150HP and he said that would be right on the line as to what the clutch would hold...I have no previous experience w/ Centerforce but from the feedback I've heard...its mostly been negative.

I'm also waiting to hear back from http://www.clutchnet.com as well as ACT.

I will post further info as it arrives.

Why replace the clutch when your stock one will last to at least 60-75 with any abuse. Most people wait till there stokc one is gone then get a new one. 5th gens haven't been out long enough to go through clutches yet!

Ohhh don't make me start with you Russ......1st off

how many ppl have a 4th gen that require a performance clutch, very few. Plus if nothing is said or asked of they companies will not know how much of a demand there is, its better to start out early, than wait till the last minute, when your clutch is fried and to find out there is nothing out there, but OEM. Plus I don't particlarly like the feel of the stock clutch. ( And out of anyone I would think you would be all for it.

I am all for it dweeb!! You misread what I meant! I meant that is basically why people are not responding, not everyone has a need right now!

I'm not in the market right now . . .

But go ahead and count me it. Obviously I'd like to have some choices besides OEM when the time comes for me to replace my clutch.

help

I'm always looking 4 things 2 upgrade my Y2K ... but I'm new 2 the manual transmission ... thus ... I really can't complain about the stock clutch ... how would a new upgrade clutch help me?

Will it b easier 2 shift?

Will it make my car faster?

Will it last longer?

Tkx ...

I can't see any reason to go with an aftermarket clutch unless your stock clutch is fried or you're putting so much power to the flywheel that the stock clutch can't transfer to the wheels under WOT without slipping... neither of which is likely. It's still nice to know that they exist, though.

I guess I'm one of the few 5th gen owners....

that actually wants to make some serious power.

If you plan to do any major mods (ie: nitrous/supercharger) then an upgraded clutch IS A MUST!

Adding a perf. clutch to your basically stock Maxima will not make it faster neccessarily...it will last longer than stock...and I'm sure it will give you a MUCH BETTER feel than w/ the sloppy A$$ stock clutch which, on my car, almost feels like its slipping...ever since new.

Personally, I prefer a clutch that GRABS.

I think I'm just gonna let ClutchMasters make me a custom clutch...partly because nobody else seems to be interested... so i'll just look out for myself then.

The C.M. tend to be very aggressive, grab like a MF'er, but almost completely lack the horrible chatter associated w/ many cheaper agressive clutches.

Actually the stock clutch is good up to 300hp at the wheels. No reason to replace it unless you feel it slipping under the extra power. Loren has had his stock one for 25k and with close to 300hp to the wheels, he hasn;'t had a problem with it.

I've asked around for someone to do my clutch, I guess I'm ready for the day my 3rd gear slips. its about $150 to install a clutch, and to my knowledge I think stillen already has a stage 1 clutch for 2k Maxima. count me in, but I'm not buying a clutch til mine goes out.

This is interesting

I see the 5th gen clutch sucks, too. I've got a 96 and I'm not too satisfied with the clutch performance. It is strictly satisfactory. Not any better. It can't really even chirp on the 1-2. Funny thing is, I somehow blew out the 3rd and 4th gear synchros (luckily covered by the warranty) and we decided to get the clutch replaced as well as the throw-out bearing. Well, the damn new clutch starting slipping under performance driving soon after it was replaced. I was powering down an entrance ramp in 1st gear and did a hard shift to 2nd. The rpms started creeping UP after the shift (i.e. they stayed at like 5 grand). That pissed me off. On a better note, it has been months since, and I have seen no traces of slippage that bad. It seems to be like the original....My cousin has a 94 Integra LS with a CAI, and exhaust - he can chirp the 1-2 pretty hard with 14" tires, and even the 2-3 on certain (dry) surfaces. I'm jealous

Re: This is interesting

It looks like your the victum of a Nissan key value clutch. Those are the worse clutches you can get for your car, they are about $30 cheaper than OEM clutches. Also if anyone has a service manual all you have to do is compare the clutch models. The clutch from 85-99 maxima's is the same model number. I believe an ACT street clutch would do just fine, in my sentra it grips just fine. I can chirp 2nd gear all day long with my sticky Re71's. We should put a disclaimer in the FAQ about avoiding Key Value nissan clutches.
