beware who you pass at high speed...

why? cause there seems to be more and more unmarked troopers on our highways.....

yesterday, on the way home from work going south on I-5 on the south end of sacramento, i saw a tan colored 2k2+ maxima stopped on the right shoulder behind some lady with in a saab convertible... i thought what are they doing?

as i drove by them i caught a glimpse of what appears to be the maxima driver standing between the saab and the guard rails but just thought it was a passerby helping out the lady...

then as i got farther down the road i looked in the rear view mirror and saw the bid bad "red" light towards the passenger side of the max and the infamous "blue and red combo" blinkers in the middle... they were still flashing....i thought, holy cow!!! an unmarked chp max... what a total sleeper....

dang, i gotta slow down now and go by that radar i've been wanting to get....

At highway speeds a radar detector most likely wont help you. They will pace your car instead. They are good investments though. Be safe!

Can't speeding up then slowing down throw the pacing off?

I got caught by a stopwatch. Officer was sitting on an elevated entrance ramp, and was using a stopwatch to time people between the 1/16th mile markers. The radar detector was of no use on that one...

All they need is a "matched speed" that is above the limit, then they own you. They have to be able to at least read your license plate.

Contrary to popular belief, hitting your brakes when you know you are being paced or nailed by radar does not flash an "I'm guilty" sign on the back of your car. Of the many times I have been out riding with my cop friends, they will actually watch for the person to slow down (or speed up) then make a decision whether or not to nail them. Another note: Of the times that I have ran the radar gun myself, it has been set at 13 over. If they set it any lower, they would be pulling everyone and their grandma over.

We have an unmarked Mercury Cougar here in AZ that patrols the 101.

I saw an unmarked Infiniti I30 pull someone over in CT. It had a spoiler, fog lights, sunroof, the whole 9 yds. I guess their paychecks are getting fatter!

That sounds more like a speed trap.... which i thought couldn't be used by highway patrol.... well for chp anyway...

Helicopter and airplane patrols use the dashed lines on the freeway to calculate your speed.

I've always thought Mass. was one of the worst when it came to speed traps, and that link just confirmed--no known policies against speed traps. Just gotta be very careful out there!

Radar detectors

Oh, and another note. ALL my cop friends said they issue tickets to people with radar detectors (discovered when they get pulled over).

Generally speaking, radar detectors let you know AFTER you got nailed.

They do work good when there is other traffic around to set it off ahead of you.

Florida has the nastiest traffic patrol there. AAA rated it the worst state to speed in, and 60 minutes had a show on 2 counties somewhere in Florida about how they ticket you for like 0.5 mph over the speed limit. On the average though, Florida is the worst state to speed in.

I think I've seen all tricks

Got a timing one.
Did a fly by (140+) wrote up as 120 in the middle of a race no radar, arrested ....
Double parked; no ticket
Pace; no ticket

I always take my detector down when I see one in hawk mode.

I have ideas on how to crack some of these other methods, but it will take too long to develop, I just choose my moments wisely, and take extra caution when I'm traveling.

I have a Uniden Bear Tracker it's kinda lame, I may need to spend more time with it. There are some things we can do that might get us in trouble with the FCC.

Humm, a brake light mod may be needed. This would let us slow down without LIGHTS. Again illegal.

That's crazy!

You could just spray fart spray in the car, tell them you crapped your pants and that you were hurrying to the next rest stop.

At highway speeds, when the radar chirps, it's usually too late, the cop already has your speed and is mostly likely in drive to catch up to you.

I've never heard of, or seen an undercover MAXIMA though! I've seen Taurus' and Expeditions... not maximas.. heh

Not crazy, if you switch on and off when needed.

Example:

You are racing/speeding there are NO cars close to you, you see something, flip the switch. Slow down. Flip the switch back to normal operation. No one gets hurt, besides if you are going that fast, there shouldn't be many cars close to you to begin with.

Oh, they have seem that soooo many times it's almost a joke to them (the bathroom thing).

But, it sounds crazy, that's cool.

another easy thing...

When you're in moderate traffic...

Find a speeding dummy, someone going really fast. Just stay several car lengths back, and if there are any police ahead, the dummy will get nailed instead of you. I used some idiot in a new Mercedes SL convertible that way. He had to be doing around 90mph(limit was 55), because I was doing almost 85mph, and couldn't keep up. He dodged in and out of traffic in an area where the police like to hide in the shadows of overpasses. Big no-no. Sure enough, a police Camaro sitting on the shoulder lit up and went after him.
Another tip is, drive very smoothly. Jerking the car around in and out of lanes and cutting people off will attract attention for sure. Just like in car chase movies, it gives the illusion that you're going faster than you really are, and the officer might say you were driving in an unsafe manner.

Be safe, guys!

police aircrafts against speeding?

I wonder how does it work? OK, they measure my speed from a chopper, have my plate. What's then? The owner of the car will get a ticket in the mail. But driving violation is the responsibility of the driver NOT THE OWNER! So, if somebody would claim in court that he loaned the car to a friend from overseas in court, I guess that's it. The judge should let the guy walk away.
I remember reading in Washington Post several years ago about red light cameras (they just appeared for the first time). Most of people paid the fine. A small percent went to court and ALL(!!!) were found not guilty.
Besides, you can determine with the radar (or laser) the DIFFERENCE in speed between the radar and the object in question. I guess, even more correctly the speed component toward the radar. Perpendicular component of the speed vector should not affect the Doppler effect. So, they would have to know the EXACT speed of the chopper or the aircraft. How? GPS?

A lot of times they have officers on the ground and they just write up the ticket. That happened to a friend of mine. They use lines that are on the road and time how long it takes you to get from one to the next and find out how fast you are going.

well, in response to the original post, here's another way cops are working the freeways, at least here in southern cal.

i'm in the fast lane on the 60 eastbound just past the 57 interchange and coming down that mountain pass thru diamond bar/chino hills. it's around 10pm and i'm cruising at 80-85. traffic to the right of me is prolly at about 70-75, so i'm creeping by everyone, but only slightly. the carpool lane is to my left and there's no one in it.
in my rear view mirror i see a motorcycle closing really fast and it swerves from my right lane across my lane (behind me) and flies by me in the carpool lane. superfreaking fast. i half think about flooring it since the freeway's wide open now and cuz with a cop in front of me, i'm feeling pretty good about my chances. but then i hear some ryan seacrest commercial on the radio and decide to pop in a cd instead. two lanes over i see a toyota camry taking off after the cop, obviously thinking the same thing.
i'm watching him go for about a half mile, when a CHP cruiser flies by me in the carpool lane at roughly the same speed as the motorcycle. again, i watch him go for as long as i can see then i lose sight of them cuz i reach the bottom of the hill and lose my vantage point. neither one had their lights on, but i figure they're on their way to an accident or something down the road.

i pass the romona exit and i'm moving over to catch the central exit when i see the cops again. they're pulled over with the camry on the side of the freeway. i just got out a speeding ticket over the summer so i was feeling pretty lucky i didn't jump on the gas.

for those of you who use rabbits, it looks like the chp will provide you with one in lieu of a civic.

E-brake is a good way to slow down so long as you dont pull too hard or its obvious. You can also turn O/D off for 3rd, 4th, and 5th gen (2k-2k1) or drop it to 3rd for 2k2+.

You'd probably want to be at least a hundred yards back; instant-on radar can also keep hitting cars (i.e. your rabbit gets hit, then you do because you're too close to slow down in time). Right on about the weaving between lanes.

That would work, but there may be some mechnical issues if this is done over and over at high speeds?

I'm not quite clear why using the E-brake would prevent the cop from stopping you. All he cares about is your speed, so if you slow down without stop lights or with them, he's got your speed, so it seems to me like this is useless.

I also use rabbits, but I make sure I stay behind them as far as possible without losing my sight of them. If you stay too close, the cop will pull the rabbit AND you over. Also, learn to recognize headlights in the dark, this will definitely help out. Also, if your driving at night, and you see someone approaching you extremely fast from behind, slow down cause it could be a cop. Cops don't tend to just cruise on the highway, they're always moving 80+mph.

In short though, keep excessive speeding down to a minimum when you're on the road by yourself (i.e. late at night) as you're the only car that draws attention. However, during other times when there are other cars moving fast, there's ALWAYS some dumba$$ who's flying like crazy and obviously not concerned with a speeding ticket. Use them as rabbits.

I use rabbits also.

The light thing was a situation when, you may be getting paced, or just getting a little too much attention. Hence, dropping your speed pretty quick without "looking" guilty. Have you ever passed a cop, radar goes off, there are multiple cars he could go after, but the car that brakes obvisously has a radar detector, "bingo" you have just tagged your self as a radar having habitual speeder and if you have mods yummy. What would be cool is if you slow down, he runs up sees that you are actually not "with" the pack ... he goes after the pack.

Oh, speeding at night is bad, you can not see them, but they see you

Another thing, they may just sit there and radio ahead to other cars waiting to pull you and the rabbit over, I find it "safer" to speed on a road and area that I know.

I've seen an undercover black Mustang GT on the mass pike (Rt. 90) for about a year now. Dark tinted windows and aftermarket wheels. You'd never expect it to be a state cop. My guess is that the State confiscated it or something like that...

I use the rabbit thing all the time, but I always have an eye in the rear view afraid someone is coming up on me from behind. Depending on traffic flow, I also watch brake lights of the cars ahead of me very carefully. Most people put their foot on the brake as soon as they see a cruiser or a speed trap, even if they're driving 5 mph over the limit. As soon as I see the brake lights ahead, I slow down and move into the middle lane. Saved my butt more than once.

I also do this. The key in this whole process is to always be alert and never leave yourself open. Make sure you're covered from the front and the back (i.e. you know for a fact that the car behind you is NOT a cop, and just make sure that it stays that way). Also, when I pass cars (American ones especially that could be cop cars), I always glance inside and see who's driving. I've seen more than once uniformed cops inside, so I just pass them and carefully switch lanes to slow down.

As soon as I see the brake lights ahead, I slow down and move into the middle lane. Saved my butt more than once.
I'm the same way. I have one eye on the road, and one in the rear view. I don't know why, I usually don't speed. When I feel like I am going fast, I'm really doing 5 under.. it's weird, but i'll still be concentrating behind me and in front of me for brake lights.

Kinda funny to see someone else is like me..

I live in Tampa. I own a 01 se. I have been caught in sooo many ways I eventually had to just stop speeding. I was crossing the bay and was pulled by a 99 f150. On 75S by an unmarked maroon crown vic. And countless other FHP ans local sherrifs. I guess their persistancy in pulling me over has paid off for them. In my case anyway. The FHP have just added Camero w/ LT1's. Top speed of about 185 and an unknown HP rating. I love FL and will never leave so I had to realize through court dates and massive tickes that my passion for driving fast was costing me to much. The lights dont even phase me any more. Is that bad? He He!

I take it you're on a first name basis with all the police down there?
