Snow tires

Maybe this has been covered before, but I am new to this forum. I have a new 2002 Maxima that I absolutely love. But I live in Wyoming, and when it snowed a week and a half ago, I took the Maxima out and it slid all over the place in the new snow. I had to park it until the plows got out and sand was spread. The car came with Bridgestone Portenza tires. Can anyone recommend a snow tire that works well on the Maxima that I can switch onto the car for the winter. Thanks!

I ordered from tirerack.com, steel 16" rims and Dunlop Winter Sport M3's. Great winter tire, and also doesn't take away much from cornering performance. In today's snow storm, they handled great. I was nervous at first going up a steep hill, but put it in 2nd and slowly went up it, passed the SUV that was stuck. If you want a tire that is good for pavement as well as slick conditions, go for it. I didn't get Blizzak's b/c people said they comprised handling, and had a lower speed rating. They are great for ice/snow, or so the reviews say.

I had Blizzaks on and older car and they were ok in the snow but sucked on ice. To be honest, no tire is good on ice. My ex-girlfriend said it best when I complained about it "What's better on ice? Ice skates or roller skates?" I was like duh.

Well, I returned those (imagine that!) and got Gistlav Frosts with STUDS. Let me tell you, NOTHING stopped me with those (I passed more than one 4x4 with my FWD). Now the studs are noisy and screw up the handling but they really are the only thing other than chains that work on ice.

Winter tires have strong and weak points. Some are better in snow others are better all around. If you are going through the trouble of getting snows, get one that can't be stopped by winter!

Those are the only 2 snow tires that I have experiance with, but I noticed that the bigger the tread the better they are in the snow.

snow tires

I replaced the OEM Toyos with some Michelin MXM4 for the rain and summer and run Michelin Arctic Alpins for the winter. I live along the Canadian border so we get lots of snow and ice. Last winter they were fantastic and saved me from a few accidents. I got them from tire rack on regular steel rims.

In yesterday's snow storm in Massachusetts, I was keeping up with a Volvo Cross County on very snow covered and hilly back roads. I'm sure the guy was like - gee I didn't know Maxima's were AWD. I have Dunlop Wintersport mounted on 16" rims. Night and day over the Re92's.

WOW - 225's are wider than my 215 GLE tires. But wider is not better in the snow.

Get us a groupdeal, dude!

actually wider is not better, thinner is better in the snow. Thinner puts more force per square inch down so it 'cuts' through the snow and gets down to hard stuff for traction.

I'm in the market for snows so thanks for the writeup.
