Remote transmission range!!

Okay...keep in mind that I am easily amused here...

I had dinner at the top of the Space Needle in Seattle the other night (which is around 500 ft up). And the parking lot was at least 1000 ft. from the base of the needle. Being the inquisitve person I am, I located the tiny-looking parking lot and of course could not even begin to see my miniscule-sized car...that is until I turned on/off my stock Nissan anti-theft "alarm" and saw my parking lights flash. Pretty cool!! It was the highlight of my evening!!

Nice.
The range actually depends on where you are. For example, on the parking lot at my local Costco warehouse I can't open the car remotely from two feet ;( Some times got to use the key.

Same here. I would guess it hits from at least a football field away. The range will shorten once the battery gets older, but when the new one pops in, it'll work just the same. The range on it is the farthest I've seen.

i believe the remote works from up above better. when i walk outside sometimes it wont work from about 60 feet, but when i go home on the 8th floor it works fine and even from my friends who live on the 13th floor it always works. btw, what battery does the remote take and how do you get it out?

It takes a CR2025 Lithium Battery. You can get it at Radioshack for like $3. To get it out just pop open the FOB by inserting a screwdriver or other flat-bladed tool in the notch on the side near the ring and twist to separate the front and back. It would be a good idea to clean it with a little mixture isopropyl alcohol and water (50/50) while you have it open. A lot of dust and crap gets in there.

Probably the reason it works better from above is the position of the sensor inside the car. It's on the front of the dash. Try holding it up higher when you activate it, that should help.

FYI, the best range I have seen mine work was from within the commuter train car (lots of metal) as it rolled past my max parked about 150 away (I couldn't remember if I had locked it so I said, what the hell! and it worked).

If someone parks too close to it I can let them know by setting the alarm off from my 4th floor office, about 200 feet away. The windows don't open, they are affraid I'll pitch my computer out... To think about it, the signal out of the fob is tronger than my crappy Nokia cell signal, well almost...

i love doing that.

i've actually done the space-needle-to-valet-lot horn beep...

also, the 4 seasons olympic hotel downtown, 17th floor suite, to the street below.

seems odd that sometimes it doesn't work when i'm standing right in front of it. guess maybe there's less interference 500 ft up...

the old **** towers in Mass... I used to work on the 14th (really 13 but Dr. **** was superstitious and skipped that number)... so, it worked from 13 floors up with the car about 500 feet from the building. My friend was p.o.-ed that his Ford keyfob didn't work from there.
