What kind of hitch can I get?

I need to be able to haul my bike to track days and some racing this year. What kind of hitch should I buy and where should I get it?

The manual says the car has a 1000 pound towing and tongue capacity. What does the tongue weight mean?

not so sure about the towing hitches...try going to a shop or U-Haul..they'll be able to give u a much better 'safe' advice.

I think toungue weight is the weight thats pressed onto the vehicle.. say your towing a towing a trailer with 2 wheels.. one on the right one on left.. and theres a metal bar hooked onto the car and without that the trailer would fall the to the ground.. some of the weight is on the 2 tires and some of it is on the car.. the weight on the car is the toungue weight.. I'm not to sure and I need sleep so if you still need help i'll try to help you out tommorow.. hope this helps, and if i'm wrong please correct me.

I got a tow hitch installed on my car quite a while back. I got it from U-haul for about $180 installed. According to the note on the hitch itself it says that it has a max of 2000lbs towing and 200lbs tongue capacity.

Get a hidden hitch

Here's a picture of the hidden hitch installed on an AE. You can only see cover over the receiver.

Hitch

It's dead simple to install and well built. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a hitch.

I'd be VERY careful towing anything with our auto trannies (if you dont have a cooler).

Looks great - where can I buy one? What do you tow with it?

I have a manual - should I still be concerned?

Hitch

The Max can tow 2000lbs although I'd never go that high. I have a hitch on mine and I tow a small motorcycle trailor with 2 dirt bikes on it. I just make sure I don't use Overdrive unless I'm on the highway at > 50mph. I also go easy on the brakes and do slow accelerations. The Max ain't made for towin' but it gets the job done. Get an aluminum trailor if possible, otherwise get a motorcycle trailor like I have with just an axle, frame, and two ramps that look like skiis. If you get the big 5x8 trailor with sides and built in ramp it creates a lot of wind drag and you will hate going > 60mph. Just my .02, but I've towed my 2001 KDX-220R around for a couple summers now.

You can find a reseller close to you at hiddenhitch.com. Their store locator actually works, even in Canada.

As for what I tow, I installed mine last fall with the intention of using it for a bike rack. Unfortunately the geometry of my bike frame made finding a rack problematic (many racks would fit the car but not the bike, arrg). I did find one that would work but it required a slight modification to my receiver (drill a new hole for the retaining pin) in order for the bikerack to clear my bumper. So I've put that off until this spring.

One thing you may want to do to your hiddenhitch if you intend to use a bike rack is to get them to remove the tongue stop inside the receiver. There's a little piece of metal folded over into the recevier to act as a stop for the tongue. Makes installing the tongue dead simple (push in until it stops, insert pin) but can interfer with some bike racks. The hitch shops apparently have a tool to this easily (or sole the Thule dealer I was taking to told me).
