Decoding VIN Numbers

Im in the hunt for a 2000-2001 Maxima 5 speed, hopefully an SE. Ive been searching a lot of dealerships inventory and was wondering if the VIN # gives any clue as to whether its a 5 speed or auto, and what model it is. Thanks and I look foward to joining your community REAL SOON.

Re: Decoding VIN Numbers

There was a post/link on here at one time that gave the breakdown of the VIN and which numbers meant what.

Try this link first:

I just discovered, there is no way to tell if the vehicle has an automatic or manual transmission by the VIN number alone!!!

For example: VIN#JN1CA21C9YT123456 would be...

JN1 - Maunufacturer (Japan Car)
C - Engine Type (VQ30DE)
A2 - Model Series (Maxima A32)
1 - Body Type (4-Door Sedan)
C - Miscellaneous (Air Bags, Etc.)
9 - Check Digit (Always 0-9 or X)
Y - Model Year (2000)
T - Plant Code (Oppama)
123456 - Serial Number (Your Vehicle)

Sorry...
