"Finally completed the 1,000 mile factory break-in"

I've finally reached the 1,000 mile mark on my odometer which means factory beak-in is over. I'll be changing the oil/oil filter tomorrow.

I thought break in was 500 miles?

I just did break in oil last night (509 miles)

Then I took it out and whomped on it. I beat it like a stolen rental. Too soon?

just kidding. I did get on it but with the clutch engaged and only in 1 gear. That's no big thang.

I thought it was 1200 miles.

"During the first 1200 miles (2,000km), follow these recommendations to obtain maximum engine performance and ensure the future reliability and economy of your new vehicle. blah blah blah."

That's harsh dude! I know my 1000 mile break-in period was the longest 1000 miles I have ever driven. Now granted, the statement doesn't exactly add knowledge to the .Org but I for one understand his excitement.

I had so many times during my break-in period where people would p^iss me off or do something that would prompt me to go fast, cut them off, slam on my brakes, etc. but I couldn't. I was all "You are SOOO lucky that I'm in the break-in period!"

Well, congrats! Now start street racing already!

You waited until 1000 miles to change your oil! I hope your engine is ok.

2002 Maxima SE,
that is pretty standard. 3,000 miles is when the complete break-in process is over and all of the valves should be well seated. I don't plan on switching over to synthetics until the 10,000 mile mark. Just to be safe.

Let me try this again....[clears throat]...AGHHHHHHHHHHHHhhh, 3000 miles...an engine CAN NOT take 3000 miles with the same oil from the factory. It would have large ice berg size chunks of metal floating around the engine. Your engine is trashed, be prepared to get a new one and this time change the oil every 5 miles like you are supposed too.

Between the 1k mile drive to get my new Max home, and a few unscheduled 600 mile,(round trip) roadtrips-my month and four day old car has hit 3,900k already. Good Lord.

I waited until 2000 miles to change mine. 67,000 miles now and the car hates the taste of oil.

Went synthetic at 12,000 miles, change it every 5,000 miles with a filter in between.

According to page 5-15 of my 2K3 owner's manual, the break-in period should be followed for the first 1000 miles.

does the maintanance manual NOT say to shange oil at 3750?
Looks like people are making their own rules here...

I think the manufacturer knows the best time to change the oil..

I had my first oil change for my 2k2 Max at around 1500 miles. I was getting a bit worried as I was reading this thread--- thanks for the reminder!

Then your 2k3 manual is different from mine. Mine says, on page 5-15, to follow the break-in schedule for 1200 miles.

September 2002 (26) printing.

Oh well, what can I say. Mine has a printing date of March 2002 (23). That shows that Japanese engineers don't agree among each other. I hope it doesn't get worse when they start assembling the Max's in the good ole USA.

Synthetic for the first oil change?

Ok, after reading this thread I'm convinced I need to change my oil and filter after 1,200 miles. Any recommendations for the weight and type of oil? Synthetic? Dino?
Thanks
Bruce
