I would like to put wider tires on my 01' SE. Do I have to get new wheels to do this, and if so what size wheels work with what tires. Sorry to sound so dumb in this area, but I need your help.

You need new wheels

If you want to go wider than 225s, you need 8 inches.
You can squeeze 235s on those 7 inch factory rims, but it wouldn't look right.
I know some people who put 235s on 7inch rims with no problems, so maybe you can do it.

To be safe, I would say get wider wheels and put either 235's or 245's on them. Putiing 235's on 7" wheels may work, but is not a good idea.

235 Series fit fine on the stock 17"s

I just bought a set of Nitto 555 Extreme P235/45R17 for my stock 17" rims and they mounted up just great. The guys at discount tires said they looked great and that they balanced out very nicely. Nitto's specs for the 235 series is a rim width of 7.0-9.0. The tires handle great with very little road noise, but the ride is slightly rougher. We are only talking about 10 mm wider which is really not all that significant IMHO. Just my .02 no flames please.

I agree with ya D Man, I'm running 235/45/17 Dunlop Sport 5000s and they fit the stock rim fine. Huge improvement over those crappy RE92s.

Hey D Man, have you had any more problems with your auto supercharger? Cause if i remember correctly, you had some problems a few months back. I'm really looking into getting one, but not sure since i'm an auto.

DMan,
No flames. I'm looking at the Nitto's as well, but there are a couple of forum participants who hate them. Most of the bad I've heard is in regards to the 450's. How are the 555's on wet roads? How do they handle under hard cornering and how are they under normal (lawful) driving conditions??

I'm also looking at the Potenza RE730's in 225/45-17. I realize they're smaller diameter. This begs a question to you Max enthusiasts out there: Does Nissan calibrate the speedo on Max SE's with the 16" standard tire offering, or do they recalibrate all the speedo's on the SE's that get the 17" wheel/tire package. If the answer is 16", than the 17" tires are 2% over which is OK and what's even better is the 225/45-17 RE730 is only then about 1% under, a great tire choice.....

Comments??

I haven't had any problems what so ever since Stillen sent me the new pulley with upgraded bearings. I did have some problems a few months back but I think that has all been corrected. It's funny, every time I drive up to my shop the first question out of all the guy's mouths is "How's your car running?" Check out my thread under "Supercharger in Automatics" just yesterday. Later

I really don't know why some of the forum participants hate the Nittos, but then again I'm not into autocrossing. I happen to really like the tires and they handle great under hard cornering. I can't speak about the wet weather traction because it hasn't rained here since I've had them installed. Under normal driving conditions they are fine, however, the ride is a little rougher but not too bad and there isn't that much road noise. Some of the guys up at my shop who drive Supra turbos and eclipses run Nitto 555 Extremes on their cars and really like them. I wouldn't go for the NT-450s because I haven't heard one good thing about those tires, even the guys at my shop told me to stay away from them. Goodluck in your tire search.

DMan,
I noticed you have the updated TCU. Going in to Nissan service tomorrow to convince them to replace my TCU with the newer version (my max was built 3/00). Any problems with getting yours replaced?? The service manager said to me he'd have to test drive it first to determine if the upgrade is necessary. I plan on convincing him.....

Thanks for the info on the 555's. Since it's winter here, I've just switched over to 15" steel wheels and wheel covers with 15" Blizzak WS-50's so the performance days are over until spring....I'll look at the new tires more seriously then...

No problems convincing my dealership and that was even after I had the S/Cer installed. They didn't question it and didn't charge me to boot, even though I modified my car.

Nitto 450's are nasty. Discount Tire talked me into them on my Firebird when Nitto first came out with them. I'll have to admit, though, they were better than the stock Goodyear Eagle GA's.

I've heard nothing but good things about the 555's.

I wouldn't mind going with 235's also. There are SO many more choices with that size than with the 225's.
