Hey guys, I was wondering if all you auto drivers turn off overdrive when driving anywhere but highways, and, does it prolong the life of the transmission?

I never turn off my O/D. What that does is keep your car in 3rd gear. So you'll get worse gas mileage and I'm sure its harder on your engine.

 

On highway you use the overdrive to minimize your consuption on fuel and your transmission too.
But if you want to race with someone, don't put overdrive that allows your transmission to shift near the redline and have a good performance. (and d'ont forget to disengage the traction control)

You'll find more specific information about this topic in your car manual. It should be in your glovebox.

 

I never use OD in traffic (unless it's interstate traffic, of course) or if I'm not sustaining speeds of 45+ mph for any length of time. I'm sure it's killing my mpg, but I'm just as sure that it's NOT killing my transmission. I like to have a responsive throttle, and I also like to hear my intake growl!!! My $0.02
