Service Engine Light On!!!! Wtf!!??

i just got done cleaning my TB using some TB cleaner, and now the car idle's funny and SEL is on!!

i've done this cleaning at 3500 miles, 15000 miles, now its 28000 miles, what gives? did i **** something up?

the idle goes from 1500 after i start up the car and goes to 800-750 like normal, then when i tap the gas, it revs then goes down to 1500 and stays there for a few secs then goes back to 800.

any help is appreciated

did you accidentally get some TB cleaner on the MAF sensor???

was the MAF tube attached to the car when you clean the TB?

What did you use to clean the MAF? You should use carb/brake cleaner since it dries quickly without residue. Any residue (oil, cleaner fluid, etc) on the MAF will result in inaccurate readings. That triggers the CEL and bad idle. Take it out and make sure it is clean.

i know i dont have a 2k2 but i woudlnt spray anything on the maf. he was talking about cleaning the throttle body, hopefully with carb or intake cleaner as you stated, but i wouldnt spray a thing on the maf. i would check to make sure the clamps are tight.

I did the same thing on my 4th gen and the MAF went bad.

Does the car start shaking really bad at about 2500 rpms?

Is the idle over 1000?

If yes to both you probably need a new MAF.

There is an electrical contact cleaner that we used in the Navy, and it's manufactured or at least home based in ST. Mountain, Georgia. I can't remember the name of the stuff though. No residue, and is perfectly safe to use on any electronics.

Presume you checked that everything is connected as it should be including any vacuum hoses. Sure sounds like a vacuum and/or air leak somewhere.

Why? Don't make blanket statements without some facts. I've done this on several cars/trucks. The MAF gets a little crud on it and goes haywire. I've had this happen before on other vehicles. Careful cleaning of the MAF can save you from having to buy a new one.

I had the same thing happen about 30k miles ago. I just went back and cleaned it again, made double sure no residue was left, and let it sit open for about 5-10 minutes and the problem went away. I don't think it's anything to really stress over though..

Have you done this on your Maxima? I will not suggest to do this on Maximas.

I will not suggest to do this on Maximas.
And why would you suggest that? Please state something more than 'the sky is falling'.

No, I have not done this on the max...haven't had to but I do have a K&N in my max and WILL NOT hesitate to remove and clean the MAF if and when this happens.

I have done this cleaning on:

91 Explorer
96 Explorer
01 Explorer
96 Lexus SC400

All with no problems and no return of CEL.

so you havent done it on your Maxima.

I am suggesting it because there are many Maximas with MAF issues in the past two years. Nissan noticed this problem and then issued a TSB on the sensors. I am not saying cleaning the MAF sensor is a bad thing for the cars on the list below. But, in the case of Maxima, I will not take this risk to touch this sensitive device. My suggestion is based upon what I've read in this forum since 2001.

if you want more information, try a search on MAF.

thanks for the replies....

1. I didnt clean the MAF
2. No cleaner got near the MAF
3. I sprayed the cleaner around my throttle plate cause it was dirty
4. I wiped it clean with a towel
5. Reattached the air intake assembly (theres only 1 hose) and started the car. No check engine light yet....
drove for 1 mile, then idle starts going up and down, so i figure its the MAF, but MAF is good, i take apart the intake assembly, look at the throttle plate, AND ITS STILL OPEN! its opened a notch, when i first started cleaning it, it was closed TIGHT, i must have done something with manually opening and closing it to get it to stick open!!! DAMN IT! anybody know how to get it to close? could I have gotten some towel threads stuck in there that im not aware of?

P.S. its a drive by wire system (electronic throttle, NO cable)

Try unpluging the throttle motor and pluging it back in, that will reset it. I had to do this all the time when I was having the pedal stop problem. And I agree with you on cleaning the MAF, I work at a Dyno, and tune cars all day. I have cleaned countless MAF's and never had one quit, and I as well will not hesitate to clean mine when the time comes. I have 17k and have had a K&N in it the whole time, no probs here.

I dunno, just unplug it, count to 5 and plug it back in. I never really thought about it.
