1st to 2nd transmission problem

HEy all,

I had the TSB repair for my 2000 GLE done - but it appears they only did the solenoid fix and replaced the A/T control unit. It defintely solved my slipping from 2nd to 3rd.

However, now it is very noticeable that the transmission "delays" in shifting from 1st to 2nd. I would not say it slips, but there is an obvious hesistation. It appears it always occurs around 3500 RPM.

I going to go bakc in and see if they will replace the TCM - just checking with .org members to see if this is consistent with their experience.

Also - does the TCM replacement makes a noticeable difference.

It appears to me that all they did was "trick" the transmission into shifting faster to third before hte slipping takes place. I was wondering if that is basically the result of the TCM replacement also.

As a side note - when your MAx shifts from 1st to 2nd does it kind "sit" down a little in the rear - sort of feels like it bogs for a second until the 2nd to 3rd shift occurs?

A/T control unit = TCM. If you are still slipping, the tranny is gone.

different part number

The A/T control unit that was replaced does not match up with the part numbers used for the TCM on the TSB.

My understanding is that is was an electronic part.

I'll check with the service department - but I think (I mean I hope) it is something different.

because there are 3 TCMs. the sticky TSB is the first or middle release. Heck, there may be 4 by now. I have #2 :/ It works about like #2 as well...

damn

I was hoping maybe they wer eonly fixing my complaint - not all the problems.

Still - I'm going to keep bugging them until either I can't take it anymore and sell the car or they fix well enough that I can live with it.

Truth is - I'm not big on WOT - but still, every once in a while I notive it and I guess I figure the problem is always occurring, even if it is not noticeable, so it is better to fix it than just ignore it.

try crossing a few lanes of traffic, if it leaves you slipping @ near WOT, then its a safety issue. plain and simple. There are only a few times in traffic when you need WOT thru a 1-2 shift, and when you need it, you *really* need it and slippage could be all the difference.

Does that TSB apply to the 02 as well, mine slips 1st to 2nd all the time as well and the dealer said nothing is wrong. Where do I find the TSB, I tried doing a search and nothing came up. Chris

there is a tsb sticky at the top of the forum which has all the tsb for 5th gen. I have the 1-2 tranny hesitation but have not taken it in yet. I know i should asap, how long did it take nissan to switch out you solenids or whatever they did. How long did you run with the hesistaion before you took it in. My only hesitates at WOT and no where else.

almost 3 years

Actually, when I first got my Max I did not really notice it. I did not drive it a lot in the first 18 months I owned the car and I drove pretty gently for a longtime.

I did not really notice the 1st to 2nd problem until I had the 2nd to 3rd problem fixed.

I tried unsuccesfully 3 times to get a Nissan technician to agree with me - I started trying to have it diagnosed/fixed at about 20K and finally got it done at 34K. By then the 2nd to 3rd slipping was so obivous it occurred on every shift (not just high rpms).

I'm going back in to have the 1st to 2nd slipping looked at.

It is covered for 5 years/60K so mileage is not my concern. I'm afraid all that wasted time trying to convince them to fix it may have done more damage - although the guy that did the reapir said there was no debris - he felt like it was more an electrical problem than mechanical.

Unless the dealer you go to has a great service department i would start now - it sometimes takes a lot of effort to find a good Nissan service department.

Check here on the .org for some recommendations of good Service Departments in your area - that's how I found the place that did my repair. I went to others that were close by, but eventually someone on here said try this place and I did and they were very willing to help.

I am on my 3rd tranny right now. This one is starting to slip at WOT from 2nd to 3rd and has always slipped from 1st to 2nd since I got it. I am so upset with this tranny problem!

Get a new tranny from the dealer. They should replace it now, after all you have done already.
