How important is the breakin period?

OK.
I have been reading the whole thing about break in periods.
How important is it (or was it)
I personally thought that new cars were OK without it now.
I know that there are many people with different opinions.
I personally drove it as I usually do.
Now with 1500 mil. and have been driving it without thinking about the breakin. Did I mess up?

dont sweat it...
as long as you didnt redline it and run it hard. one opinion is that running a car the way it will be driven is actually better for it. In some cases, i've heard of less oil being used and better gas mileage from 'normal use' break-in. I'm not very educated about it, but have heard from some engine guys who have that view. As long as you were nice, it will be nice to you.

it's okay
Most cars don't even have break-in periods now.
The Maxima has an unofficial one, 500-1000 miles or so. What you are supposed to do is go easy on the car, not redline it too often and don't cruise at one engine speed too often.
Seeing how you've past that period, don't worry about it. Just drive the car and enjoy the ride!
FYI, I've asked around and I've never heard of a case where someone did not break it in and the engine got messed up. The only time not breaking it in will ruin the engine is if you drag race a brand new engine.
