For those who traded their 5th gen for ...

An Infiniti or Audi or BeamArs!
Can you shed some light on what a 5th gen trader should be expecting.
I have a 2K SE Base model w/moonroof, auto, 57K miles, cosmetically sound, no mechanical mods (but some cosmetic, AE stuff and brake upgrade which necessary), transmission is majorly slipping but the dealer will take care of that. Outside of that the car is sound. I want to trade for either a G35 coupe or A4 or 525/530i. I called my finance for the payoff and its 17K, what should I expect. Any thoughts? I love the max but dont want any problems with the tranny once I am out of warranty. In your opinion, was it better for you to have traded? sold the car on your own? or ?
Side note: I have a wife so a 6 speed is just not an option. I wouldnt mind a 2K3 if I find one fully loaded for under 23K.

Based on the very little research I've done (I have a 5-speed 2000 SE and plan to buy it in April off the lease), I think you'd be lucky to get enough to pay off the 17 grand on the car. I've seen anywhere from 13,500 to 17,000 (dealer advertised) for 2000 SE's with manual's. The auto adds a few hundred to resale, but you're way over the 15k/year average mileage that most of the books use to determine value. That's going to cost you a bundle.

www.edmunds.com has a "what is your car worth" feature. I ran a loaded 2000 SE in mint condition with 57k miles, and it came up with a dealer retail of about 17,500. No way you'll get that much on a trade, though. If you trade up to a 2003 or 2004, you'll probably do better, as the dealers seem VERY motivated - I get offers once a week about upgrading my lease.

Good luck.

So let me get this straight......you owe 17K on a 2000 SE BASE model and you wouldnt mind to trade it to a NEW 2K3 LOADED Max if you could find one under 23K? Yea i guess you would....but i doubt you can pull that off....get a new max loaded for less than 6K more than your 4 year old base max with 57K miles.... we would all like to find a deal like that....my guess is you are 3-4K upside down on your car.....

Are you leasing or buying your Max? Having $17k payoff on a base SE after 3-4 years is too high if buying. The car with the mods, high mileage and slipping tranny is a $10k car imho. Think about it, you can pick up a 2002 with 20k for $17k these days.

3-4K is quite possibly what I am upside on the car, however, I intended to pay that difference cash when I trade. There are lots of deals going on these with new & demo cars. You never know I just might catch one. By the way, I got the Oct 2001 so I am pretty on par.

You got the Oct 2001 WHAT? Pretty on Par with WHAT? I still say you are way off assuming you can get a LOADED 2K3 for less than 23K.....7K off sticker?? How long have you had your car? I hope your not saying you have had it since OCT 2001..and you still owe 17K. how much did you pay?

I just bought a 2000 SE 5 spd loaded-I believe it has every option-with 41K for $15,500. I have been looking for one of these since last summer, and the prices have been in the high teens to low 20's. But now all the dealers arouond here have them for $14500 and up,retail. My guess is that they are all coming off leases now that they are 3 years old. I'm in CT,dont know if its different anywhwere else. I'd guess these same cars brought around $12000 for a trade in price

wow

It has to be horrible to owe more on the car than the car is worth?
I got my 2001 fully loaded and owe no more than $11K now, but than again I put down a bit.

Tradein value on your car would be 11-13k. Dealer would be crazy to give more for that car.

I am picking up a 03 SE stick with 5500 miles for 20000. Guy got a company car, and is just paying off what he had left. Deal or deal? I would go with deal

I dumped my 2K Max off for a new G35 sedan, but my lease was up. I just parked it, and walked away.

It's not fun, but still, your method suffers much the same pain...the $$$ you put down are now worth less than they would have been (due to the depreciation on these things). It just stands out much more when it is a loan balance than hidden in a down.

I haven't read any other posts, just your's. I say be patient, and sell your Maxima outright. I traded in my 1998 Maxima for my 2k3 Maxima, and I was $4,000 upside down (they only gave me $10,500 for my 1998. I owed $14,500 on it, so I had to put that $4,000 on my new loan, and luckily it was at 4.9%. But if I was more patient, I could have sold the 1998 for $13,000 (it was in great shape and had EVERY option for a 1998) That would have saved me $2,500...

BTW, get the G35 coupe or the 530.
