Just got Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 235/50/17
OMG
It feels like I'm sitting in another car. My ride is much smoother and the cornering is much improved. All this time, I thought that this "was the best my max can do" and lived with it. NO MORE!!! I seriously doubt that I'll hydroplane again at 40 mph after driving for 2 hours.
My only grips are (and maybe it's just me)...
* being that my tires is a bit bigger, it makes it look a little awkward. I'll have to check it in daylight and after I put some armor-all on it.
* i notice that the car shifts from side to side at times. I'm going under the impression that the new tires need to break in. I dunno...any comments?

i didn't get much of chance to thoroughly test them (picked up the car about 4 hours ago). however, i do know that the car feels a tad less peppy. perhaps the smaller tire (circumference) of the 225/50's had better torque. I'll do some more driving tomorrow.

Alright then, all I really needed to know is if the 235 ont he stock wheel is safe. I know, I know its been discussed like 4368 times on the org be4 but to tell the truth I never really got a solid bottom line answer if they are 100% safe. I need tires and I need then like yesterday, Im not jokin I got like 25K on my potenza's and they are almost down to slicks Im most probably gonna go with 235/45/ to compensate for the large thread. If I got with that size when im goin 60, its actually goin 58.8 so its about 2.1 % too fast which is well within the 3% error margin. The 235/50 will be 1.5% too slow say ur goin 60 ur actually goin 60.9. Its still not too bad but I still dont know. I just want to be 100% sure its safe to mount 235 on stock rims. Sorry 4 the long post, Thanks

HitmanSe it's only 99% safe because .org members assume so. We can't over ride the manufacturers recommendations and specs for their tires. Having said that, most people with the 235/50/17s are happy and haven't had any problems.

How will the sidewall look like, is it still pretty much straight up and down, or will it have a slightly more angled look to it.
I am planning on removing mine and going up to 18s, if they come off soon, I'll let you know if you want to buy them.

Well my thoughts on the pilot sport a/s's go like this. I notice about half as much body roll during hard cornering w/ h&r's, a little more noise and they sound like a screamin jet at 120, wet traction is almost unbelievable, still can't go WOT from a dead stop, and I love the tread pattern.

And finally how many bills did it cost you?
Haven't heard about the road noise with these tires before - as if we needed more wind/road noise at high speeds...Jeesh.

Sumi -- What size ?

Yeah, I just checked that. Still very expensive. I've heard the Sumi's are similar in wear/traction/weather driving to the Pilots (but much less $$). Any truth to this?

For the Sumis I'm looking at 235/45/17.
We're supposed to only use 215/50/17, but that's way too thin.
The other option is 225/45/17, but I think that's to short for our stock wheel gap.
Someone said I might be able to squeak by with 235/45/17s so I might give those a try.

Okay...More Impressions today
1. The tires fit on the Max that's for sure.
2. Gas mileage seems to be improved...I noticed it on the drive home. It usually drops significantly.
3. The sidewalls and the rim align up pretty well. There's no flaring IMHO.
4. Definately not as ridged/jolting of a ride, compared to the stock potenzas.
5. Maybe its just me or the tires need to break in, but on freeway driving...the car feels a little susceptable to wind. i dunno...maybe it was a windy day. I was passing a tour bus and my car shifted when it edge past it. i know this happens to all cars. i just don't ever remembering it happening on the potenzas.
6. After taking a good look at it today, the tires don't look overly big at all. in fact, it looks kinda more agressive and stockier looking. i think it has to do with the width of the tire. but even at the side, it looks good.
7. Again, the cornering experience is hands down the most noticeable difference between the stock potenzas and the pilots.
the jury is still out for me on the michelins...at least for now.

That is the car "riding the rails". It is the best way I can explain when you car slips into a groove in the road. Continuous traffic wears the asphalt down to where there are grooves in the lane. new rubber can hook up on those grooves like a needle to a 12" record!
I test drove a BMW M3 and when it locked on the "rails", I nearly went to correct the car, thus almost losing control! At 80 mph, It wasn't funny..... My max did the same thing when I switched from 15" wannabe BBS rims to my current 17s with some ZR-rated tires. I was prepared when it "rode the rails"................
Just get used to them, that is all.

hmmm...that's a good possibility. the steering seems to have "mind of its own" when i'm driving in lanes with some smaller grooves. the self-guided effect seems to less on smoother surfaces. such a sensitive tire.
someone asked about traction (WOT), the tires feels glued to the ground...minor wheel spin (2k auto). i have to reserve my judgement until this weekend when it rains here in so cal. as far as pictures, i'll post them soon.

I personally think that the 235/45/17 would be the best between overall size, and keeping the speedo in check. Well ur the rubber dude, If ur runnin 235/45 on stock 17's (atleast I think u got stock 17's ) Then Im 100% confident that the same size will be alright on my ride. Im not gonna try to argue with u about tires (I know better ) Just asking 4 fact. So all I want to know is are u runnin on stock wheels with 235/45's ?

I have that size and they do not rub
