I test drove one and it was in pretty bad shape.. It looked good from the outside (despite a few obvious bumper dings) but the inside was a disaster. It had what appeared to be red and orange kool-aid stains in the front, and scratches on the interior trim pieces..

There was also a funny noise I heard occasionally when turning.. cv boot?

Anyways, do you guys think these cars are a money pit? Do you think there are any good ones there?? Is there anything one can do to protect themselves when buying from one of these Car rental/sales places??

Thanks!
Dude, stay far, far away from rentals. People beat the living crap out of these things. You'd be better off buying from just about any other source.

Well, if you want to spend the money and fix it, it should be an OK car to have. I wouldnt personally bank on it. Rentals get the $hit beat outta them.

Go to Divx.com Download that file, Install it. After installing it, click on the link and it should play. If that doesn't work, Right click the link(I'm not a Mac guy) and save it to your hard drive. After that you should be able to play them.

2k2 SE former enterprise car. (long?)
I worked as an assistant manager at a used car sales dept. until I recently switched over to service.

My last experience with a max was a 99 5 speed that we had on the lot. I loved it...

When my Camaro got Totalled in July02 I went to Enterprise to get a rental..and they gave me a 2k2 maxima. I fell in love.

I went to our dealer's Nissan franchise (Don Davis Nissan) to look at a new Maxima SE. Leather...LSD, 6 speed...only $30k?!

I can't afford a $30,000 car on my limited budget.

So instead I spent $19,000 and bought my 2k2 SE direct from Enterprise with a whopping 11,000 miles on it. It was in perfect shape. No paint damage. No door dings. No stains, scratches. Clear oil. I did a front brake job and a full detail on it. It has no leather, an autotragic, and no sunroof. It has no Bose.

Not only did I avoid the TERRIBLE depreciation on new Maximas, I got a car that I loved. Instead of owing $25,000 or more on the car, I only owe $12,500. That should make it easier to trade up for an 03 SE with leather, bose, and a sunroof.

But you know what? I don't think leather, bose, and a sunroof is worth $11,000 more to me. So I am perfectly happy with my cloth seats and stock stereo! Especially since I'm able to use all the money i saved on MODS!!!

Am I the only one that finds a front brake job on a car with 11K miles
highly unusual?

Sorry for the delay in posting...
when driving i noticed some degree of pulsation on hard stops -- apparently warped rotors are a common problem on modern Maximas. Brake inspection revealed i had like 60% or more pads left but the rotors were out of round, i did a one cut pass on the brake lathe and installed new pads to be on the safe side. turned both front rotors. No more problems.

BTW -- I drove a 2k2 demo with less than 5000 miles on it and it too had the same pulsation?!

I used to work in the car rental industry. I would NEVER buy a vehicle that was a previous rental. I could write a book on the abuse some of those vehicles took from customers and neglect from the agency itself. Here are a few highlights:

I had a customer call me up one afternoon who stated that the airbag deployed on him while he was driving down the street. I had never heard of this happening before so I told him to bring it in and we would give him a different car. When he got to my office I went out and looked the car over and sure enough the airbag had deployed. There was no noticeable damage to the front bumper but on closer inspection I noticed transmission fluid leaking out from under the car. To make a long story short, he had driven the car over a large dip in the road at about 50mph and bottomed out so hard that the airbag deployed. He also tore a hole in the transmission. We fixed the car and charged the customer for it (without giving him another car to trash). I'm certain that someone somewhere bought that car on the used car market. I feel bad for that person.

I also remember getting cars from another office on more than one occassion with 15k or 20k miles on the original oil filter. Other than brakes and tires we never did any other maint on them. Recalls? Forgetaboutit. Not unless the car stopped running would we bother with a recall.

Anycar is a good deal if the price is right.
Yes rentals sometimes get abused, but not everyone drives like tis group of enthusiasts does.

Most renters are sales men, business travelers, old PPL, etc that just drive normally.

I have rented cars many times myself or in a group and we all drove mostly hiway miles.

It's also interesting to hear that some people here have done searches on the VIN of a car on a used car lot and found out that they were previous rentals. I know that many dealerships here actually stamp "Previous Rental" right on the window sticker. I'm not certain but I would guess that in California it is the law that you must disclose this. Why would a dealership advertise the fact that a car was a previous rental if it wasn't required by law. These cars are usually a good $1000 or so under Kelley Blue Book retail price. I saw 3 or 4 on the dealer lot that I went to first before I bought my '03. They looked okay but who can tell, they usually respray the bumpers and have the interior steam cleaned so it is very hard to tell by looking what kind of abuse the car has been subjected to.

I still wouldn't buy one and I wouldn't recommend a previous rental to anyone.

No way. Rentals may/may not have been abused. But some rebuilt newer maxima w/ a salvage title MUST have been wrecked to hell. Let's say it was a 2k2 and the wreck happened in 2003'. In order to have a rebuilt title, it would have to have more than about $18,000 in damage. You want a car that's had 18 grand in damage done to it? Expecially when the rebuild could have been done by some schmuck that didn't care how it was done? Pass

if I told half of you what I've done to rentals in the past, **** even lease cars, you'd **** urselves...

as a matter of fact, most recently about 9 months or so ago, I had an Olds Alero as a rental, put it like this for the week I had it, the car went back with no brakes (slid into the lot literally with the concrete divider stopping me from going through Enterprise!!!), many many cigarette burns and cuz these jerkoffs yank the ashtrays out (thinking u wont smoke in a rental) I used the coin holder as an ashtray....

hey it aint mine!

Ill tell you something about rentals
Me and a buddy of mines headed out to this rental place, and rented a grand prix. Here are some of the beatings this car recieved.

1. Drive in reverse @ about 25 mph and quickly throw it in drive and slam on the accelerator. You would hear the transmission squeal from a block away. It kinda sounded like hard knocks. We also headed out to this Mud area (where people go mudding on theyre bikes) and boy did we have fun. When we took it back,It was deeply covered in mud and the transmission was slipping big time. The vehicle didnt wanna change gears. It kinda smelled like burnt tranny fluid while driving. Luckily we were able to get the car in 2nd gear @35 mph and take it back. We almost had to tow it back to the rental place. Not only this but we also had a donut on because one of the tires blew out. Took us about an hour to convince the rental dudes that we werent the cause of the transmission damage.

But this would be my reason on why I wouldnt buy a rental. (ever seen that rental part in the movie jacka$$? You should watch that movie before you decide on a rental.

I've had sex in a rental car...but then, I've had sex in some of my own cars also.

I've had rentals returned that people had been living in, people drive over curbs in them, they steal them, I've seen them stripped, broken into and some of them just plain smell funky.

I wouldn't take a salvage/rebuilt car either.

This ones really bad
Every Tuesdays and Thursdays We have hangouts down here in Miami. Where hundreds of hooked up cars come around and hangout. I noticed that there were some older 5 gen maximas (00,01) with 2k2 and 2k3 H.I.D lights. I asked them how much they paid for theyre lights and they started laughing. I asked them, "Whats so funny?". They said "Well we paid around $75 bucks." To make the story short they told me that they would rent 2k2 maximas and switch the headlights with theyres and then return them (and the rental place wouldnt notice).

LoL, I cant believe they did this.

This thread brings back funny memories. A few years ago I had a group of friends the rigged up a "rental car" nitrous kit. It was reserved for that use only. If I remember correctly, it had a cigarette lighter plug for electrical connections and they ran the lines through the front door window. Kept spraying till something blew, then pulled it out and called the rental place.

I've seen Geo Metro's smoke the tires for miles and half shafts split in Grand Ams. They'd almost always toast a motor or a tranny. I'd never buy a rental. Pretty funny looking back on it though.

this one time I got a rental, I drove it from the airport to the hotel. I drove it over to the client location.. on the interstate! Then after like 4 days of that, I returned it.

Then this other time, my car was in for service, I got this crappy rental sentra. I drove that thing all the way to work... then back to get my car.

This one time, there was a spot at the very front of the store but there were two huge piece of shat SUVs on either side AND I PARKED THERE ANYWAY!

Oh, good times...

i wouldnt be cought dead buying a rental car even if it was for free

here is my best rental story, rented a 2002 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab, it was brand spanking new had less then 300 miles on it,
man i gave that hting a beating, took it off road and abused it like i wouldnt abuse my Jeep, which is a beater , then right before returning it, i went to a praking lot and di some donuts in it for about 30 minutes, from what i hear they had to replace the tires on it after i returned it it only had 450 miles on it too ..i feels sorry for the person who ever ends up with that truck.point here is dont buy a rental..cuz i might have driven it
oh also got a rental buick lesabre stuck in a mudpit...but thats another story

I call bs on some of these stories. If the rental companies inspect the car and see damage of any kind, you or your insurance company is responible for the damages.

Here in TX it's not the law but when I was ASM we always referred to these cars as "program cars", "off-lease company vehicles" or "fleet turn-ins". That avoided some of the stigma of telling customers we got their car from Enterprise or Thrifty.

Most of our cars are not acquired by trade-in. We depend on the auto auctions and manufacturer lease turn-in sales to populate the used car lot. Very few cars on the average used car lot are trade-ins, mainly because trade-ins usually require the most work to be "front line ready." The trade-ins we do get and sell are usually specialty vehicles (BMWs, Mercedes, SE Maximas...) <grin>

Speaking of that, we have a 2k GXE, black on black, auto, 37k miles, chrome AR wheels if anyone looking for a cheap used max...also a 99 SE 5 Speed with 66k miles, dark blue on black leather...this is not an ad, just letting people know that maximas DO get traded in, and not to give up hope if you havent found your dream Max just yet!
