I had a great talk with service dept. yesterday...(long)

I called in reference to modding my car and voiding my warrantee. I told the guy that I had recently purchased an 03 SE and wanted to mod it. He asked my what I wanted to do and this is what he said,

Intake- "That's a great idea, you'll love how much this will open up your car. As long as the unit has some place for the MAF, and we'll replace the MAF if it goes bad"

Lighten Pulley- "I don't know what kind of #s you'll get but there could be a problem with the harmonic snyc. This will void belt replacement but besides that there should be no problem. You could wait till after the 36K check-up and not lose the belt warrantee."

Y-pipe- "I don't think this is a good mod, your not going to get much in performance and you'll have to do some cutting. I'm pretty sure that void the exhast warrantee."

XF Radio- "You should have a button that will give you XM, all you will need is the the reciever and the antenna. No voiding"

Overall I was pleased that they were this positive about modding my car. The y-pipe bothers me a little I don't remember anything about cutting the exhast to put one on. I was sure that they were "bolt-ons." I couldn't find the button for the XF on my dash and not sure it it is labled something else. But as soon as I can muster up the money I'm throwing the y-pipe on.

Me happy, very happy

nice. sounds like your dealer or serviceman has been on the org. offering to replace the maf sensor was very cool.

Which dealer? People should know the "friendly" ones.

I just called the place near me (I've been curious and this prompted it) and asked "I'm thinking about putting on an aftermarket intake. Would that void my warranty?"

His answer "Not automatically, no." I asked a few more "for instance" questions and he said "ok, if something goes wrong and can be traced back to the intake then it's not covered. Like if the fuel/air mixture causes the catalytic converter to fail, that would not be covered."

Can a/f mixture cause the catalytic converter to fail? (I have no idea, but I would have thought 'no').

I live in western NC...and I was glad that I didn't have to play the "swaping game" everytime I took it in for service.

Yes it can, cause fuel may go thru the exhaust system still burning and melt the cat convertor. But an intake pipe wont do that, only a faulty igniton system would.

Definately some good dealers out there, I have yet to check with mine about mods etc.. but I think that's what everyone should do, just individually phone their dealers up and ask. Maybe even before purchasing from a dealer, call up and ask what they think about mods.

I've not had any service problems with my dealer personally, and other than the fact that they don't offer courtesy cars and I had to walk around a couple hours when my O2 sensor broke, everything else has been very decent. Plus they knocked off a lot off my 2k price (mainly cause I bought a 99 two months before, totalled it and needed another car.. so I'd bought 2 cars in 2 months from them... very nice deal tho on my 2k.. so I was happy, my insurance didn't go up at all either, lol)

I'd like to think that SOME dealers give all Nissan service bad name, but maybe I'm just an optimist

I would definetely get this guys business card and possibly get it in writing about which mods will not void the warranty. You never know what another service rep might say if you bring it if someting breaks!

Thats why it helps to be in good with the General Manager.

GM: Hey you've got Nitrous on this car?

Me: I was told that would void my warranty if I put that on.

GM: Yeah just make sure it's not on the car when you bring it in for service.

If I take my car in for service will the service dept. take note of my intake and put it into the computer?

Im not sure, I guess it depends on if the service department
people are cool or *****. My service department manager
told me to do what ever I want and and not to worry about
anything, he would take care of it. Sweeeeeeeet!!!!!

If you guys lived in ny i would say go out to Smithtown nissan, Dan Ziegler one of the salespersons there is also a Z specialist, and i shouls be buying a 2k3 se 6-speed from him within the next 2 weeks, he is all about modding like crazy. i went to see him today and he was just like we have to get you this car so we can start modding it. I believe he comes to this board occasionally, he has a red 4th gen maxima that is pretty damn nice. I cant wait, because out of my main circle of friends which is 6 people 3 of them already drive nissans, so i need to get one to join the fun.
