I'd go with Falken Ziex 512..great all weather handling/traction

300+ treadwear rating, A, A and less than $150 per tire

They're okay. I just rotated mine and they are wearing a bit quicker than I would like them to. I drive moderately hard on them, but they are probably going to last me about 25,000 miles total.

Hey, I just called Sears and they have the Falken ZE-512 on sale for $112 until the 29th. If they don't have'em in stock, you can special order them for the special price and it'll take 5 to 7 days to get'em. Good luck.

If you don't need to drive in the snow, try Yokohama AVS ES100. Sticky, awesome wet traction, but competely useless in snow.

$136 from tirerack.com (in 235/40-18).

As an aside, how come so few people use these tires?

I think Yokos have a shorter than average tread life... Obviously it depsnds on your driving style, and its not like they are only going to last a season or anything!

What about Falken 451's.. Everyone seems to like the 512s but for an extra small amount of cash you can get the next model up??

Although the Falken 451 has a more aggressive tread pattern than the 512, the treadwear is only 280 compared to 360 on the latter which means that the 512 will last longer. On the other hand, the 451 has a better traction rating (AA) than the 512 (A).

Treadwear and traction are mutually exclusive. Every tire is a compromise between the two.

Decide what's more important, and go from there. If you want long-lasting tires, forget traction (particularly in the wet). If you want to stick like glue, figure on replacing tires every 2 years (or more).

That's totally true but if you look at the specs of the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S, the treadwear is 400 and the traction is AA. Don't look at the price though.

I've owned the Pilot A/S and wasn't impressed. The problem with treadwear ratings is that they don't always compare accurately from one brand of tire to another> Also, many high treadwear tires get harder as they wear, making them all but useless in the wet. That's what happened to my Pilots.

I got to about 30K miles with the Pilots, but for the last 10K they were atrocious in the wet (though very predictable), and anything more than light throttle would spin the inside tire while coming out of a corner, even in the dry. They were decent in the snow, but I'm glad I bought real snow tires this winter.

When I pulled the Pilots off, they had plenty of tread left, but the tires were essentially useless. The ES100's stick far better than the Pilots, are much better in the rain, and if I only get 20K out of them, so what? At $135 each, they're far cheaper than the Pilots.
