Nissan Wants To Rip My Engine Apart!
Nissan Wants To Rip My Engine Apart!
And have the nerve to tell me MAYBE its gonna be covered under warranty..
I probably have one of the oldest 5th gens on the board and recently its developed a knock.
i went in for the "FREE CHECK UP" and told them about a knock ive been noticing. After inspecting the car i was told i need a new starter and as far as the knock "it's a Lower Engine Knock" says the service writer "bring it in on Monday and well tear your engine apart and we might charge you for it because our mechanic says you have a lot of MODIFICATIONS" Mind you the ONLY mod to the engine is my Frankencar intake.. WHich leads to another question.
Can an intake create engine knock? then he proceeds to ask how long ago the car was in an accident. which it was but not a major accident only the fender was replaced and it occured shortly after i purchased the car in 99. How can an accident have anything to do with engine knock? SO should i allow Nissan to do this?

By law, they can only deny you warranty service if they can prove your modification caused the problem. Even if it didn't they could still be stubborn idiots about it and not cover you.
Here's a write up: http://www.zx2.org/zx2warranty.htm

you need to get Nissan of NA involved as early as possible. If your dealer gets caught *between* you and Nissan NA, you will pay.. However, if Nissan is involved from the start, the dealer can't lie about what was really wrong (after its fixed). Also, the dealer may actually feel alittle more latitude to make repairs of Nissan NA is involved (ie, they wont have to worry about getting shafted on the repairs, which in turn comes back on you).
Since Nissan NA has (partly) covered an engine torn apart with nitrous, I do believe you'll be ok on this one, whatever the problem turns out to be.
btw, my car is 6/99, bought in 7/99. I hate to hear about this kind of stuff
makes me what to trade.

I probably have the oldest 2k on this forum, I bought mine the day it the showroom and now I have over 130k on the ODO, my Nissan mechanics told me the same thing about tearing my engine apart due to the knock.
However, they did some compression test and found no loss, they also mentioned that they might dyno my car as well, I got scared when they said they'd tear my engine apart so I haven't taken it back to them yet.
My knocking started around 70k and I haven't had any problems out of my car even with the knocking. I've learned to live with it, it doesn't hurt when I accelerate or when I run it hard. I've made plenty of long trips, from NC to Chicago and I still haven't had any problems, thank God.
If I were you I'd go get my vehicle check at an engine specialist before allowing Nissan to tear it apart, have a few diagnostic tests done and maybe a compression test and dyno it as well.
Good luck
