I have a friend who had a 00 GXE auto with a few mods done. He doesn't have it anymore so I asked him what happened. He told me that he redlined it during a streetrace and the engine blew. Is this possible??

I've hit the rev limiter before and don't recall that it was redline.

Not unless he took the rev limiter off. The car is designed to protect itself from bad drivers.

Unless he was doing like 90 mph and dropped it into 1st gear, I don't think he can blow up the engine by simply redlining. It would take much more to do that.

Seems like I can hit 6600 on wet roads. All I have to do is floor it and let the <b>Potenza</b>'s spin and it goes all the way up there. It's sort of scary because it goes up VERY fast.

if you are going 90, the computer will analyze what gear will be acceptable for 90 and it will stay there...won't redline, may downshift one gear, but that's it. There are only a few cars out there that don't have rev limiters. My friends mazda millenia for example, the red zone on the tach starts at 7000 rpm but he's been up to 8000 rpm.

Unless the engine had a defect from the factory...hard to believe. I back the comments of the other posts.

no

if he burned up his engine it wasn't from exceeding the redline. next time you get in your 5th gen, stomp on the gas in neutral for a few seconds and you'll see that tach bounce up and down CLOSE to the indicated redline marking w/o exceeding it. wa wa wa wa wa wa wa wa wa... i've done it a few times to show disbelievers. (it's just like the playstation gt game, only it's in a maxima )

That is a way to check rev limiter, but I don't suggest reving the motor that high without a load on it.

not too sure

i have a 2k gle. my bro and i were drvin down a street and we had to drop someone off, but the light was still green but no cars behind us,... so he stops and drops him off.. then the cars start to come.. so he let go of the break, and like 2 seconds later with a small rolling start he floored it.... i know he revved it up to just about the max, but wasent sure.. i did not look at the metre since i was too impressed with such pick up! hehe but yeah.. i am pretty sure we just about got to redzone... but nothing happened... there must be some other reason why your friends car had that problem.. i highly doubht redlining it will have such a great effect on the car.

yeah i've been racing and accidently drop it into first (try to drop it into 2nd, but finger slips)...when i'm going over ?43mph (where 1st gear redlines) it will just stay in the lowest gear it can until i slow down enough for it to shift into 1st...

1st-43
2nd-75
3rd-110
4th-?

lets say i'm going 100mph in 3rd gear and i drop it into 2nd...well if i am not accelerating it won't do anything and the car will wait until i hit 75 or lower to downshift into 2nd...this is on autos...not sure about sticks

Seems like the auto tranny is totally mistake-proof that way.

The repo-man probably took his car away and he just made up that story so you wouldn't think he couldn't afford the car.

A side question: How high have you revved your engine? (while manualy shifting your auto of course)

I can get about 47mph in first gear at 6,550. Its sorta hard to shift it at that exact rpm. I have to move the shift into "2" right at 6,100rpms or the engine will go "BOOOM" cutting off fuel. I heard it before, sorta rings your ear

I've heard I30's shift at redline. Maybe you can install an I30 TCM ?

Yours must be an exception. Redline is at about 6700. If you get there, you will get fuel cut to drop you back down. You can continue to bounce off the limiter but can't get past it. In an auto, it should be impossible to get past the fuel cut since you can't downshift past it. The computer won't let the tranny engage the lower gear as someone noted above. With a stick you CAN exceed fuel cut by being very stupid and downshifting to a gear that will put you past 6700 rpm. (i.e. downshifting to 2nd at 80 mph).

I'd get that checked out.
