I don't think requiring 91+ octain would be a strong selling point. It's too bad the search funtion is down, but this has been discussed many times over. Ultimately it'll cost you alot more if you put less than 91 octain in your car because it will retard your timing, give you worse gas mileage and down the road screw your engine. So ditto to the quotted statement.

Engine knock is a direct result of lesser grade octane. Using mid-grade octane in the engine will not hurt it, if you use an additive every so often.

the manual clearly states that octane boosters will ruin the engine

Stick with 93 octane from BP Amoco, Chevron, or another major oil company and you will be fine.

What about the Chevron Techron additive available at AutoZone and PepBoys?? We do not have Chevron gas stations here in Chicago (I've never seen one) and many on the .org have raved about using Chevron w/ Techron. The one I'm referring to is a concentrate of TEchron to add to your fuel.

Will this be harmful to my engine???

My Max loves Texaco 93 octane. I tried a few others, like Mobil and Chevron, but it seems to like Texaco better.

as far as using less than 93 octane gas, i recently tried Exxon 89 octane gas during the winter, and for some odd reason the engine felt more responsive and had the same or similar fuel economy than 93 octane gas.

but now it's getting warmer i think i'll use 93 octane from mainly Texaco.

"anything less" will not "ruin your engine" unless you have knock! Do you have boost? Do you run it hard very often? If you use anything above 91 there's a 95% chance you're wasting your money.

Unless the knock sensors kick in and retard your timing, which over time will end up ruining your engine. Doesn't matter anyway because when you use 89 or less your gas mileage will decrease negating the cost savings. It's also been proven by several dyno's here that using less than 91 will decrease HP by up to 10hp.

I work for GE Fleet. We lease about a hundred thousand cars a year. We have paid to have studies done about preimum fuel usage. Even in vehicles like our maxes that claim to need the 92 octane really dont. You just need enough octane so that it doesnt knock. Most of the time 87 will do that. Dont fall into the myth.

thank you, but don't be surprised if nobody believes you because they can "feel the difference" not only between different octane ratings but also between different brands of gas
