Help - lost power & slight knocking sound
I have stock 2001 maxima SE - the SES light came on at about 27K. The service folks found PO420 code in the ECM and cleared it.
Currently I have 31K miles but the car is very sluggish. There is a slight knocking sound when the revs go past 2000. The car barely pulls between 2000 - 3500. (It does go past 2500 so it the MAF does not seem to be the problem).
Took it to the dealer and he drove and seem to find no problem (the usual attitude -" this is the same for all cars, change your gas company...")
Any advice as to what could be wrong ? How to check it ?

I was having the same problems with an automatic 2000 SE that I bought. The car knocked slightly above 3000-3500 RPMS, the dealership said it was due to 87 octane gas that they accidentaly put in before I got the car. Even after 5 tanks of 93 octane the problem remained. Then the check engine light went off at around 28k miles. They said it was some sort of computer error and cleared it. I have a friend who owns a manual 2000 Maxima with 40k miles and he is having the same problems with slight knocking and check engine lights now. His light has gone off twice in the last month and they just clear it every time. Thank god I got my 2k3!

Maybe you can bring your car to an auto shop and ask them to clean and clear your fuel tank. There must be a lot of dirt in the tank or something.....
Just an idea....
