It doesn't take long at all, and it sure is fun. I'm going to say that I'm not going back to autos for a VERY VERY long time.
Also, if you have a friend who has a manual and willing to show you, you can practice on that car, and then refine on your own Maxima.
But, like I said, it really isn't hard to start driving (once you learn to modulate the cluch and gas, you'll be all set). However, becoming really good at it takes some time and some more practice.

Which way, the learn on your own? Well, I had my father with me the first couple of times, and I went to an empty parking lot to practice taking off. I found that once my left foot learned where the friction point is, things went by a lot smoother. Shifting from 2nd gear on was never really a problem for me, and I just had to refine it, rather than learn.

My shifter is a big PITA when the car is still cold, and the tranny oil isn't warmed up yet. It can be a little rough going into 2nd gear, and shifting can be a little rough. Once it warms up though, it's pretty smooth. A bit of notchiness here and there, but nothing major.
By the way, I'm still running OEM transmission fluid, not Redline, which some people have said eliminates a lot of the notchiness.

Bro, I'm assuming it's the same as 2k2, since I've never actually driven the 2k2. The shifter isn't as bad as one may think based on some of the posts on the .org, but it could definitely be better. Put it like this--my friend's Mitsubishi Lancer has a better feeling shifter, no notchiness at all.

Not sure how people were able to get into 1st instead of 3rd. 1st gear locks out pretty quickly once you get going, so there's no way you can get into 1st gear gate. I just push up on the shifter when it's in 2nd, and it naturally goes into 3rd, "sliding off" the 1st gear gate (hope you know what I mean). Anyways, point is, don't worry about going into 1st accidentally, cause that will not happen.

Why would someone convert an auto to a manual when the manual is cheaper to buy to begin with? For me, there comes a point of "Maybe I need a new car" when you are doing mods.
