trans flush

just wondering what the appropriate amount of trans fluid required is to do a synthetic trans flush is. i was told that i would need 5 quarts to replace the fluid, and about 12 to do a flush. just wondering what someone else used, and what the correct procedure for the flush would be....thanks!

I just did it yesterday and installed a cooler at the same time, the system holds just over 9 quarts and mine started to pump clear just after 9 1/2.

Drain the pan and replace the 4 quarts you drained. Remove the return line, its the bottom one on the trans for a 4th gen and put it into a clear 4 quart container and hang on to the hose. Get someone to start the car and wait for it to fill half way (2 quarts), then replace the 2 quarts and repeat until it comes clean or you can see a color change. Like I said mine was just over 9 1/2 so buy at least 10 quarts.

If you don't see a color change stop at 10 quarts, it all depends on how old and dirty the trans fluid is that you have.

Its simple, effective and quick.

Yes, 5th gen AT capacity is about 12 qts. The 4th gen is about 9 or 10 qts.

I'm going to be doing this to my 2002. Do you replace the the pan when adding the 4 quarts of fluid back into the trainny. Also, how hard is it to install the cooler? I think I'm going to this mod too!

Wait a minute I'm confused. I read a thread earlier about people changing to Redline MT90 fluid and said that all that was needed was 3 qts. So, I bought 3 qts. Are we talking about the same thing here?

they are talking about ATF, not manual gear oil. maxi is talking about draining the pan then taking off the cover which removes more fluid than just removing the plug. i dropped mine as well and cleaned the pan, magnets and the screen. i know when i took off just the drain plug, i got close to 5 quarts but when i dropped the pan i got closer to 8. i have a cooler by the way.

the level is good from the last time I checked. I checked when the fluid reach 150F and it read in the middle of the hot zone.

It only took 8qt because there was some old fluid left inside the torque convertor.
