My Timing Advanced Was Done For Free!!!

Ok, so I've bought 5 cars from the same lady. She even changed dealerships and I followed her to the new one which is about 25 miles away from me. The closest dealer is about 6 miles. So today I went out there to shoot the breeze with her and to get my old license plate back. While I'm there, I show her the latest additions to my car (my custom sub box) and start talking mods with her. I tell her that I wanted my timing advanced, but that no dealer would do it for me. She tells me to wait right there. She went back and talked to a tech. The tech came up and asked what I was trying to do. I tell him and he looks at the car. Then he goes back into the service department and grabs the Consult-II. He comes back out to the car and hooks it up. It said I was at 14 degrees BTDC, which is -1 off of the Nissan standard. So he bumped it up to 17 degrees. Then, while he's got it hooked up, he looks down at my RPMs and notices that they are a little low (UDP, A/C, and subs running). He taps over to the RPM setting and bumps the idle from 650 to 675 without any questions. He asked me if that was all. I said yes and was grateful. As he was finishing, I asked him how much he was gonna charge me. He told me that it was no cost. I was like "What? Are you serious?". He really was.

I could feel a little bit of difference, but with all the recent changes in the car (UDP, CAI reinstalled, timing advance, RPMs raised) it was hard to tell just how much it benefitted me. Until I got out on the interstate. I was at 80 MPH at the end of the entrance ramp and was only in third gear. The car is soooooo fast now. I can't wait to get it back on the dyno soon.

Today was a good day.

Actually... she's not hot, but not bad looking either. She just is honest and up-front with me. And she takes care of me after the sale too, so she gets my business over and over again. I've gotten all 3 of my cars from her, as well as my ex-girlfriend's car and my brother's car was bought from her as well (I didn't pay for them).

So, does anyone know if a regular OBDII scanner will make the timing change, or does Nissan have some special scan tool that has to be used?

Total newbie question here: How does advancing the timing from 14 to 17 benefit you? What would it do for a car with no performance mods? What does it all mean Basil?

you should feel a small bump in low end torque. if you drive the same, you should get improved fuel mileage as well.

And this is a mod everyone should do. I don't know if it's the reset ECU (it's not like I normally drive slowly), or the advance in timing, but my car feels like it gained 20 hp. Talk about a bat out of hell - it jumps like you wouldn't believe now. Yaaaahoooo!!!

stock is 14-15. it does fluctuate even at idle. some tried to go above 17 but said the machine started acting weird. i had mine taken to 18 and it stayed fine. i took it back to the shop after two weeks and disconnecting my battery overnight (to make sure it stuck) and my timing was at 17 steady. there is a process that allows it to be set over 17 but im not sure how it goes.
