I thought about it too. Is SRT-4 costly to insure? How much are those things?

I dont care how fast the SRT-4 is its still a NEON no matter how you look at it. Best of luck to you. As for the insurance it should be close to what your paying now.

You'll be dead meat in a rolling start with a 6sp Max which has NO turbo lag.

I wouldn't be all that confident. Also, if it is a rolling start, most of any turbo lag will have already occurred. The turbo is already spinning on a rolling start.

The turbo won't be spinning until you go WOT or close to it.

If there is any exhaust flow a turbo spins, maybe not at full speed/boost, but there is exhaust gas pushing against the 'turbine'. Since a rolling start can be anything from off idle through highway speeds there is a very wide range of engine speeds and turbo activity.

Yeah...that's a little nuts. Best of luck to ya. There is more to just going fast...like having some style and class. I don't think too many ladies are going to be impressed...unless they're cops!

Yeah, Dodge is bad enough, they are shooting themselves in the foot putting a turbo on that thing. I'd be afraid to turn the boost up even 1 psi, for fear of watching my pistons fly out the engine block and punch holes in the hood.

dunno about that...there was a video of a SRT-4 and a mid/high 13 second talon on the highway. from a roll the SRT-4 pulled on the talon

A Neon is....a Neon. That's why I'm not interested in the car. Dodge's poor choice in early 1990s era styling (spoiler and wheels) is what really did it for me. The quality of the Neon interior, while better than the 1st gens, is still lacking also. No power rear windows either. So strange.

With all that crap said, the SRT-4 is a brutal performer. Lag from a roll? Assuming you're in the right gear at the time, lag is pretty much nonexistent. A Neon will go low low 14s@99-100mph on AVERAGE. Stock 6 speed Maxima could only wish for that kind of acceleration.

As for reliability, Dodge is very well known for building bulletproof turbo blocks. The SRT-4 is no exception. While the rest of the car might suffer from a lower quality and reliability, the motor and tranny will probably be last on the list for failing assuming you maintain the car and don't the crap out of it every waking moment.

Dave... I'll agree with you. Dodge builds great turbos (just look at some of the older turbos... the LeBarons, Stealths, Shelbys... even the Omni, for its time). There are several enthusiasts who are taking the turbo 4 from older cars and putting them in stripped out minivans and turning high 13s. Believe it or not.

However, Dodge VALUE sucks royally (the SRT will retain somewhat of a higher value... but this will bottom out soon too). Dodge QUALITY also sucks... their engines are rock solid, but their trannies seem to be built out of glass. They break all the da*n time. I know... I had an Intrepid.

As for a match... I would love to see, any day, a match-up of an SRT Neon vs. a 5- or 6-spd Max. Allow the Max a few mods (to match the "SRT" tuning and the turbo vs non turbo factor) and I am willing to place my money on the Max any day of the week (and twice on Sundays).

Turbo lag from a roll *should* be nonexistant... but from a stand still, the Max does had advantage.

I would think that if an SRT Neon beat a stock Max 5- or 6-spd, it would be by a very negligible distance.

I never have anything to said when someone post they are trading their car for another. Mostly because when someone trade, they trade up not down. Yes the Dodge Neon you brought is fast but that's it, it has nothing else on a Max.

Let's compare looks of one of our org members white 5gen vs a dodge Neon oops... SRT-4

White 5th Gen

Dodge Neon SRT-4

That is all I have to say.

it is quick. fast!? maybe. but to trade a max for a neon is imo is a
step back. hell, i traded my Lotus Elan for my max. kind of needed a
a family car with *****. but the neon? no power windows, single purpose seats, plastic everywhere. i guess if you are in that age bracet. good luck man.

buying a neon is like losing all your friends at once...

id rather go to a rock fight with no arms and no rocks than drive a neon...my buddies 2000 intrepid drives like its 15 years old and it only has 35k miles on it...and its only worth a couple grand now too and its mint condition.

you wouldnt get laid in a ***** house with a fist full of 100s if you drove that car...god bless ya

Can't believe you all are beating up the Neon. My car rattles like mad and has depreciated so badly that I can't afford not to drive it forever.

But, I would never buy one of those cause they're ugly.

cut the guy some slack.. he didnt say he thought he had more car now. he just said he wanted the neon..

personally, I think thats great. If you dont need a big-a$$ sedan, get something smaller. Having recently gone out and shopped cars, I was amazed at how unwilling I was to consider the TSX, WRX, IS and so on only because they were smaller than the max. They all were ALOT more fun to drive.

If it was a money thing (payment or gas expense), even more power to him.. Hell, if it was just to have some thing fun to drive, well he's probably dead on there too.

The most ironic thing is that while you knock that car, he will probably get much better service from Dodge than we will from Nissan.

These days with everyone going for Escalades and H2's, I like people who just get what they *need*. As for the ribbing he'll get for a Neon, well you gotta respect someone willing to take that for what they want...

good points but i worry about dodge's service being better than nissans. maybe its just me but ive had great service with nissan. ive hardly had anything done wrong except the recall on the suspension and they were fast and prompt with service.

I am not one to hate... the SR-T is fast... i mean really fast... give it a boost controller and you'll be in the 13's for sure.. not like the WRX, but cheaper...

Another thing, you guys are comparing apples to oranges... a four door family sedan to a compact sedan... it might just be a NEON, but i ran one and let me just say.. it ate me alive... I GOT a 02 auto... enough said... for quality, i myself wouldn't trust a Dodge... come on, i rather take a Z06 than a Viper... ZO6 will kill the viper on a track...well let me stop getting off topic...

The SRT has its advantages for speed, but for quality... i doubt that...

I don't know where all this 'anti-Dodge' vibe is coming from. My '97 Ram has had much fewer paint chips, made it through a $9,000 collision a couple years back, and is still going strong. Love that truck!!

Reliability? Quality? Costomer service? All are in the eyes of the beholder. Personally I think Nissan sucks on some of these, so like TimW said, cut the guy a break.

As for paint 'peeling off' have you looked at 2+ year old Max's lately? Why the need for a class action lawsuit?

I just calls em like I sees em. I've seen so many Neons with paint peeling off them in sheets-and other Dodge products as well. Doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling about the quality of the car. Then again, neither does the years of rental car experience with Dodge cars either. I wouldn't buy one.

I haven't seen any Maximas with peeling paint.

I wonder how many neon owners try to do anything about that paint? a coworker got a new truck after almost 2 years, no hassle from Dodge and only paid for sales tax difference, took 2 weeks to drive off in a new truck! They said they would repaint + 2K or give him a new truck. I agree, that paint is unbelievably crappy.

Well, I couldn't imagine trading my Max for a Neon but what I want doesn't matter. He apparently got what he wanted and I sure hope it holds up. I was in a rental Dodge Intrepid some months ago and was horrified with it. Nasty car, just nasty. So cheapy and with odd proportions and just funky. I wanted so much to like it, you know, rooting for the home team, but this car is just bizarre; I couldn't even get into it w/o hitting my head due to the rake of the windshield. When, oh when, will the domestics get it right? I never intended to be an "import" guy but years of fords, chevys and buicks took their toll. All it took as a 4 year old Mazda 929-S to change everything...I've never looked back!!

Ok,OK guys i know. I never said it was a quality car. Im definatley gonna miss all the comforts of a family sedan. But I dont have a family. Plus I just moved outta the moms house so rents killin me. If I could aford it, I would have gotten an 02 Max. But look at the 03s. Not really liking the direction nissan is going. Money was the biggest reason for the switch. And as for pickin up chicks. I already have a georeous one.{before I had the Max}.Dont knock till u drive one. Sooooo much fun..I did had to bite my lip on the whole neon thing. Ive tried to race a couple Maxes. No bites. I think there scared..Its also kind of nice havin a kinda rare car{for now anyway} Every other car on the road is a max. No reason to burn the car, beside the neon thing. Once aftermarket opens up.................................your all in trouble..hahahah........have fun with what u drive, cuz I will..

I disagree about the every other car on the road is a Max, that title goes to the Honda Accord and Camry. In my area there arent to any Maximas especially 02's and 03's I rarely see those.

yea in MA it does have quite a few max drivers...and i def agree with how UGLY THE 6th Gen's are...i saw one that i sold a home theater/video system to a dealer manager of norwell nissan...he pulled up with a 2k4 with nav...nav was about the only thing that looked halfway respectable...front end looks like an altima...rear like 350z...center console through the entire car...even takes up the middle rear seat...

but IMO...there are wayyy more dodge neons than max's around my area...so many hoodlums with clear outs it drives me insane...they pull up next to me...and i blow their doors off and they feel stupid.

those cars dont pass the safety stuff for me...like riding on tin foil...rode in one a while back...i will give em some props for being quick cars...but quick in many senses...quick to STB, quick to have paint fall off...and ofcourse...quick lil buggers. if thats how you wanna fly im cool with that...bet your next car will be something like a max tho...(you will prob go insane from the rough riding neon)

im going to search some more for this damn vid of the max vs gtp vs 350z...pz
