Is it normal for new brakes to squeek?

My car is almost a month old, it has 550 miles on it. The brakes have squeeked occasionaly basically since day 1. It seems to happen more when they are cold then when I have been driving the car for a bit and it's warmed up. Is this just a normal part of the break-in or should I have it looked at? Thanks.

Could just be brake dust, or the brake pads being broken in

Yeap.. Could definitely be brake dust.. Also was some grease or something similar put on the shims?

What do you mean 'grease on the shims'? I guess since I don't even know what that means I couldn't have done it. Would the dealer have done this?

The only thing that I've done to the wheel area since I got the car is clean the shiny rims with wheel cleaner.

So you guys think this is normal and nothing to worry about then?

Mine squeaked in reverse! for the first 800 miles. Then, everything quieted down. At 1,750...no noise at all.

thanks

Shims are a thin metal plate between the brake pad and caliper. If you take the pads out there is a metal plate that snaps onto the back of it, but I don't think that will be causing the problem here. Call your dealership if it is a bother to you!

I was told that this is common with import cars for some reason. I had brake squeal and brought my car in. The pads were fine. They also put some lubricant on and it did nothing. I guess the only way to get rid of it would be to spend the extra money for ceramic pads vs. the OEM metallic ones.

Don't believe everything you hear! The stock nissan pads are great for everyday driving.

When I got the car the dealer told me they'd probably squeel some because they're metallic pads. But, they last longer than ceramic pads. So, I guess its a tossup.. Either live with the sqeaking or buy pads more often.

My brakes on my 2003 SE squealed in reverse during the bitter winter months. But whenever it is about 50 degrees, no more squealing. So it could just be temperature related.

The pads must wear into the rotors and sort of vise versa, until that time they will squeal a wee bit... If they sqeal ALL the time (ie. not on the brakes) then you have problems

And yes cold weather makes things worse because they shrink. Once they heat up they are more properly aligned to their "worn in positions" so the squeal goes away more.... There is an anti-squeal jelly on the market, I used to use it on my old Malibu after doing the pads, they never squealed, but I never tried without the jelly so who knows....
