I emailed stillen about the b-pipe, and they told me that they do make one and it's not emission legal and the application is for 95-01????

What are they talking about? the b-pipe for 4th gen and 5th gen maximas are the same???

Sounds like they slapped something together really quick... last I heard they were too busy to make this.

I just don't get it . . .

What's the big deal about a b-pipe anyway? Isn't a b-pipe just a mandrel-bent, straight-through piece of pipe that connects the main cat to the rear section of the exhaust? Couldn't any reputable muffler shop fabricate one? And how would replacing the stock b-pipe affect emissions?

Yep...ant decent shop could do it. But, I dont care for the extra noise, so Ive left mine alone.

But, 2K2DEMAX had a shop make one for him.

It wouldnt at all as the B pipe just contains a resonator.

Right. So the only real advantage of paying a whole lot of money for a Stillen b-pipe . . . that is, once it becomes available for 5th Gen Maximas . . . is that it's made out of stainless steel. I don't know how much a Stillen b-pipe costs, but I'll bet you could have several b-pipes custom fabricated out of aluminized mild steel for the cost of one Stillen b-pipe. And I bet if someone wanted to look around, they could get a b-pipe made out of stainless for a whole lot less than the cost of a Stillen too.

ask yourself.. how does an exhaust increase flow?
1) larger piping = more flow (generally speaking.. don't go too large on all motor cars)
2) smoother bends
3) reduce restriction (which the above two do)

The Stillen & Courtesy B Pipes do all of the above.

As does my custom, 2.5" mandrel-bent b-pipe, Phuong. Only difference is, my b-pipe cost a fraction of what it would cost to purchase and install the Stillen or Courtesy b-pipes.

I'm not knocking the Stillen and Courtesy b-pipes, mind you. Only in my case, I thought I could spend my money a little more wisely.

Nope, Stillen hasn't done anything for the 5th gen B Pipe (don't hold your breath).

The Stillen B Pipes are stainless steel, as forementioned a few times.

They sell for about $260-270ish at Stillen, give or take a few bucks depending on the sales rep.

Ya, any good muffler shop w/ a mandrel bender can make it much cheaper. I usually recommend this method if a mandrel bender can be found. On the 300ZX, about $300-350 can be saved by doing a custom H or X Pipe section, muffler piping, and universal mufflers.

Re: y2kse .. what'd your custom B pipe cost u ...?

My entire cat back system ran $275.00 installed including the muffler (Magnaflow 24"). The stainless steel tip cost extra.

The shop I took it to didn't have a mandrel bender. They had prefabricated mandrels which they cut and welded into place. I also live in So. Cal., so the shop installed aluminized mild steel piping instead of stainless steel. Aluminized mild steel holds up just fine in my neck of the woods. But for some areas of the country, stainless steel is required.

About the most than can be gained from a complete mandrel-bent cat back exhaust is 5 hp. But I didn't purchase my exhaust primarily for performance reasons. I purchased it because I wanted to hear my pipes. In combination with my Stillen Intake, my Maxima sounds just plain mean!
